Michael Lambek (University of Toronto Scarborough) gave a talk titled “Ethnography and History: Marriage as Moral Horizon in Mayotte” in our visiting seminar on April 1st, 2016.

Abstract:

How to conceptualize an ethnography or ethnographic history that covers a forty year period? I draw on the concept of the horizon as developed by Hans-Georg Gadamer in order to try to capture a sense of history as it happens or unfolds. I illustrate by means of the changing performances of weddings in Mayotte, themselves among the most salient of local activities.
