The atmosphere forms a major part of the environment to which life on Earth is sensitively responsive. Changes in the climate system have set humankind in front of unprecedented global environmental and economical challenges.

Division of Atmospheric Sciences at the Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland, has an expertise on multi- and interdisciplinary approach to these problems.

To address these challenges University of Helsinki offers continuing education courses on aerosol physics, atmospheric chemistry, meteorology and atmospheric measurement technology.

These courses are supervised by world leading atmosphere science professors Markku Kulmala and Kaarle Hämeri from the University of Helsinki.

COMING COURSES:

LUOVI5: Radar meteorology, 1-week course on radar meteorology, 2013

PREVIOUS COURSES:

LUOVI1: Measurements of atmospheric aerosols: Aerosol physics, sampling and measurement techniques, 3 ECTS credits. May 5-11, 2012

Measurements of atmospheric aerosols include particle size measurements, photochemical smog measurements, aerosol formation measurements as well as horizontal and vertical aerosol distribution profiles. The course gives a good overview of the state of the art of the experimental devices. The course is aimed at PhD and MSc students and young scientists in the field of experimental atmospheric research.

LUOVI2: Formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols, 5 ECTS credits. August 15-24, 2012

The aim of this course is to give an extensive picture of the current knowledge about atmospheric particle formation, its impacts on the Earth’s climate, and the theories applicable for model studies. The course is aimed at PhD and MSc students and young scientists in the field of experimental atmospheric research.

LUOVI3: Introduction to radar in meteoroloy: dual-polarization and Doppler weather radars, 1 ECTS credit. June 23, 2012, in Toulouse, France

This one-day-course is intended for graduate students, scientists and operational users who are not yet deeply involved in the field, but want to receive an up-to-date knowledge of modern weather radars and their applications.
