Atmospheric Aerosol Physics, Measurement, and Sampling

8th Summer School on Atmospheric Aerosol Physics, Measurement, and Sampling, 3 ECTS credits (LUOVI1)

May 5-11,2012.

This is a advanced level intensive course held in Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station in Juupajoki,  Finland.

For whom:

The course is aimed at PhD and MSc students and young scientists in the field of experimental atmospheric research.

Course aims:

Measurements of atmospheric aerosols at the SMEAR II (Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem – Atmosphere Relations) include particle size measurements, photochemical smog measurements, aerosol formation measurements as well as horizontal and vertical aerosol distribution profiles. During the course the participants learn the techniques of these measurements, and see the measurements on-site.

The course gives a good overview of the state of the art of the experimental devices.

Course contents:

  • basic definitions
  • mechanical properties of aerosols
  • electrical properties of aerosols
  • filters and impactors
  • size spectrometers
  • particle counters
  • nephelometer

The course consists of lectures, group work and introduction to the aerosol measurements at the Hyytiälä station.

Teaching

The course is organized by the University of Helsinki, Department of Physics in co-operation with the EUSAAR network (European Supersites for Atmospheric Aerosol Research), which is an EU-funded I3 (Integrated Infrastructures Initiatives) project carried out in the framework of the specific research and technological development gramme “Structuring the European Research Area – Support for Research Infrastructures”.

The responsible teacher is professor Kaarle Hämeri.

Other lecturers:

  • Prof. Dr. Alfred Wiedensohler,
Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig, Germany
GAW-World Calibration Centre for Aerosol Physics (WCCAP)
  • Dr. Jean-Philippe Putaud
    Joint Research Centre, Ispra, Italy

Grades

Students are graded for the course according to the following levels: passed/failed. The course is worth 3 ects credits.
