For whom:

The summer school is mainly intended for Ph.D students, young scientist, and personnel from aerosol measuring stations involved in CRAICC, ACTRIS, GAW, GUAN, PEGASOS, and EMEP. The topics are interactively presented and discussed in English. Good English in understanding and speaking as well as basic aerosol knowledge is required.

Course aims:

This summer school is advanced course to deeper train aspects for atmospheric aerosol measurements: Physical, mechanical, and electrical properties, sampling losses, particle filters, impactors, mobility and aerodynamic size spectrometers, particle counters, integrating nephelometer, absorption photometers, online mass measurements, aerosol mass spectrometer, artefact-free sampling, and aerosol dryers.

The course consists of lectures, group work and introduction to the aerosol measurements at the Hyytiälä station.

Teaching

The summer school is organized by the University of Helsinki, Department of within the frame of the EU-project ACTRIS as well as the GAW-WCCAP, iLEAPS, PEEX, the National ATM-DP Doctoral Programme, the Nordic Graduate School “Biosphere-Carbon-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions” (CBACCI), Nordic Master’s Degree Programme “Atmosphere-Biosphere-Studies” (ABS), and “The Centre of Excellence in Atmospheric Science – From Molecular and Biological Processes to the Global Climate”.

The responsible teacher is professor Kaarle Hämeri.

Price:  The full fee of the course is 1400 € and includes full boarding (breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee, dinner, and evening meal), accommodation in two person bedrooms and the transfers between Helsinki and Hyytiälä. University students enrolled in degree programs get a 50% discount (student discount price 700 €). The ATM-DP Doctoral Program covers the course fee for doctoral students enrolled in Helsinki university, and the Nordic ABS Master’s Degree Program covers the course fee for master students enrolled in universities in Nordic (including other Finnish university than Helsinki university) and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden).

There are also a limited number of travel grants available for participants from Nordic and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden).

Poster

Each participant should present a poster about the current or future work, including their expectations about the summer school.
