Katselen 7 kk:n ikäistä tytärtäni ylpein ja hämmästynein ilmein: hän on löytänyt musiikin! Vai olenko minä kenties vain nykyisin tietoinen siitä? Nykytiedon mukaan vauvat pystyvät havaitsemaan musiikin konsonanssit ja dissonanssit sävelet, sekä aistimaan rytmin aikaeromuutoksia. Jo sikiöaikana tyttärelläni oli perusedellytykset havaita ja aistia musiikkia ja melodioita, mutta vasta nyt näen konkreettisella tasolla miten merkityksellisestä ja taianomaisesta ilmiöstä on kyse – musiikin puhtaasta ilosta. Pienet kädet takovat vimmatusti kotipianomme koskettimia yrittäen etsiä uusia mielenkiintoisia äänensävyjä. Ihmisen elämänkaaren aikana emme ole koskaan yhtä uteliaita sekä halukkaita oppimaan ja löytämään jotain uutta kuin 0-2 –vuoden iässä. Aivojen synaptiset yhteydet hakeutuvat jatkuvalla tehosyötöllä kohti uusia aluevaltauksia. Tähän merkittävään ikäkauteen täytyy panostaa!
Aikuisen ohjauksen ja musiikkikasvatuksen kautta pieni lapsi ei nauti pelkästään musiikin itseisarvollisesta ilosta, sillä sen positiiviset rinnakkaisvaikutukset ovat tunnetusti laajat. Kielenkehityksen lisäksi musiikin avulla pieni lapsi oppii käsittelemään ja hallitsemaan omia tunteitaan paremmin. Lapsi oppii muun muassa rauhoittumaan, valpastumaan ja iloitsemaan. Varhaisten itsesäätelytaitojen kehityksen näkökulmasta musiikilla on merkittävä vaikutus lapsen tunteiden ja käyttäytymisen säätelylle. Erilaiset laulut ja lorut kehittävät vauvan ja vanhemman välistä kiintymyssuhdetta sekä tukevat heidän välistä vuorovaikutusta.
