Heads in the Game

The aim of this project is to present and implement a standardized concussion management protocol to sport clubs in youth ice hockey. Second aim is to spread knowledge of concussions in sports to athletes, sport clubs and parents.

Over 2000 players have gone through baseline testing preseason 2015 and 2016. All sport clubs in national hockey league have taken part and all varsity teams (C, B and A-series boys) have been tested at baseline.

After a concussion, we follow the recovery process. Athletes are assessed using a structured protocol on days 3, 7, 14 and 30 post injury. An athlete is instructed to follow a return to play protocol.

The research focus is on sport-related concussion, assessment methods, their Finnish norms and post-injury interventions.
