Violence and Network Society
School Shootings and Social Violence in Contemporary Public Life Conference
Nov. 6-7th, 2009, Helsinki
Great thanks to all the conference contributors! You made the event very special for us.
In recent years we have seen a rise of a new kind of violence performed in the global media. Terrorist attacks and school shootings are examples of the phenomenon. This type of spectacular and extreme violence is characterized by theatrical display, symbolic character and heavy use of the media.
The Violence and Network Society -conference raises up topics such as; how are these violent acts communicated and performed in different mediated contexts, how different actors use different media to communicate the violence; perpetrators, victims, witness, mass media, social media and the official society. Furthermore we ask, how violence affects our cultural experience of social life in contemporary era of network society?
The conference combines the different disciplinary approaches of media, organization and communication studies, cultural studies, political science, sociology, psychology, and history.
