Introducing the organising committee

The time is here! To start thinking about the DENVI annual meeting that is.

The organising of the event has been underway for a while now. The date is set (6-7th February 2017), the place is booked (Pieni juhlasali, City Centre Campus) and keynote speakers are almost set (more about that later).

Because the meeting is organised by DENVI’s own students, I think it would be nice to get to know the organizing committee before any other updates. So here is something about us all.

Mari JoensuuMari

Hi! I’m a PhD student in Aquatic Sciences. I’m interested in exploring how benthic fauna and sediment characteristics change sediment stability and thus its tendency to resuspend and subsequently release nutrients to the overlying water in the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea. I also love good stories, wandering in the woods and writing poetry of questionable quality.

I am a doctoral candidate from the Department of Environmental Sciences in Lahti since 2014. I study lipophilic substances from European Parliament’s water directive framework: how much there are them in river Porvoonjoki and how they affect the living organisms in small dosages in long exposure. Environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology are close to my heart but I am also interested in teaching and science communication. When I am not doing my PhD, I read (non-scientific) books, sew (cosplay and armours) and sword fight (with padded swords).

I am a PhD student in the Department of Environmental Sciences since October 2015. I am exploring solution oriented best available techniques (BATs) for the development of carbon neutral cities at my PhD research work. Particularly, my study focuses how Helsinki Metropolitan area can be carbon neutral by 2050. Besides PhD training, I read a lot of news, sometimes write small articles, and engage in social activities.

I started working in Fisheries and Environmental Management Group in January 2015. My background is in marine science and fisheries. My PhD thesis title is – Enhancing the Resilience of Fishing Communities to Climate Change through Co-management in the Hilsa fishery – A case study of Bangladesh. I am interested in climate change effects in fisheries and resilience of fishing communities. Whenever I get free time, I play with my son, read newspapers and cook for the family members.

So there is something about us the organisors. We hope to see you at the meeting!
