Prof. Jukka Pumpanen
Expertise: Climate change; greenhouse gas fluxes; fire ecology; boreal and arctic ecosystems.
Current position: Professor, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences,
University of Eastern Finland
PhD, University of Helsinki, Department of Forest Sciences, 2004
Research interests:
Processes related to the decomposition of soil organic matter (mechanisms of the decomposition of soil organic matter and the role of living rhizosphere in decomposition). The effects of disturbances (e.g. wild fires, forest harvesting and herbivory) on soil carbon and nitrogen pools and fluxes. The effects of black carbon and biochar on soil organic matter decomposition and nutrient availability in boreal forest soils.

Docent, University of Helsinki, Forest Soil Science (2012)
PhD, University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu), Forestry (2005)
MSc, University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu), Biology (2001)

PhD Egle Köster
Current position: Post-doctoral researcher, Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki
Research interests: My research is focused on two different areas. I am working on long-term effects of forest fires on soil greenhouse gas fluxes. My second area of research is the use of biochar in the field of forestry. At the moment the main focus is on the effects of biochar on tree seedlings growth and survival.
