DIVERSITY AS AN OPPORTUNITY II: INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE COMING ALIVE AT SCHOOL

The project partners, the Education Committee of St. Petersburg, the Finnish National Board of Education, and KulturKontakt Austria have launched the project “Diversity as an Opportunity, Phase II” in St. Petersburg, which is also a part of the official Tolerance Program II of the City of St. Petersburg. The aim is to identify the competences which teachers/head teachers need to deal with diversity in classroom, and also to support the participating institutions to supply the teachers/head teachers with necessary support to develop these competencies.

Key contents
•  Exchange of experience on latest trends in developing intercultural competence and new approaches to diversity
•  Capacity building of staff of 18 Methodological Centres (MC) in St. Petersburg to enhance their support to multicultural schools – Russian/Finnish/Austrian trainers
•  Developing and piloting training programs for schools – teams of MCs

The implementing organization in Russia is the Academy of Postgraduate Teacher Education in St. Petersburg (APPO). It is also responsible for methodological support for the participants and MCs during the project implementation.
