Finnish Orthodox Women and the Virgin Mary

I have been interviewing over 60 Finnish Orthodox women in 2013-14 on the meaning of the Virgin Mary for them. The Virgin Mary has an important theological, liturgical and devotional role in the Byzantine tradition, both similar to and different from Catholicism. Through her, it is possible to understand the ambiguous gender constructions and gendered theology within the Orthodox tradition. The Mother of God plays an important role especially for women, herself being a powerful female figure at the center of the Orthodox faith and theology. What this meaning and role of hers are and how they are related to women´s explicit secondary status in the Orthodox Church will be highlighted through the interviews. Focusing on the image and meaning of Mary makes it possible to get important insights on some of the core teachings and spirituality in the Orthodox tradition, and how contemporary Orthodox women in their lived faith perceive and interpret them – in relation to their religious tradition but also to the secular Finnish society and its values of equality.

Inside the Orthodox Church, a minority of minority is also studied, namely the indigenous Skolt Sámi (kolttasaamelaiset), a population of about 1000, in Finland 700, in northeastern Finnish Lapland, Orthodox by religion. I have been interviewing 19 Skolt Sámi women in 2013, limiting my study also to the role of the Virgin Mary in women´s lives and devotion. In the case of the Skolt Sámi, the relationship of the Orthodox tradition to constructions of ethnicity, gender and syncretism is accentuated.

Suomalaiset ortodoksinaiset ja Neitsyt Maria

Haastattelin 2013-14 yli kuuttakymmentä suomalaista eri-ikäistä ortodoksinaista eri puolilla maata heidän suhteestaan Neitsyt mariaan. Marialla on tärkeä teologinen, liturginen ja hurskaudellinen rooli bysanttilaisessa kristillisyydessä. Hänen kauttaan on mahdollista ymmärtää ortodoksisen perinteen joitakin keskeisiä sukupuoleen liittyviä käsityksiä sekä sukupuolittunutta teologiaa. Jumalanäidillä on erityinen merkitys naisille.

Haasteltavia on yhteensä 19 eri-ikäistä naista.
