1. The last ESN HYY board meeting of the spring on May 14! Come share your thoughts and ideas. 6pm, New Student House, meeting room Aurora (Mannerheimintie 5B, 3rd floor).

2. ESN Wednesday Rooftop Party at LeBonk on May 16! Free entrance all night, student friendly prices. LeBonk (Yrjönkatu 24), 10pm–4am.

3. May 18, ESN Farewell Party: We are Erasmus –  We are Helsinki! Don’t miss the very last party of the semester: be Erasmus, be Helsinki, be here! Free entrance before 11pm and 4 € after 11pm with the ESN Card or a flyer (8 € without). If you don’t have a flyer yet, you can get one from the Wednesday’s party. The flyer or the ESN card will get you discounts as well. Oh and, be there already at 10pm to grab a free glass of punch on the rooftop terrace! First-come, first-served. Did you know the Erasmus program celebrates its 25th anniversary this year? ESN is celebrating this with multiple events next Wednesday, May 9 – which is also the Europe Day. Come celebrate with us! Here’s how:

1. ESN celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Erasmus program with a flash freeze at the Central Railway Station! Come and spread the Erasmus spirit. May 9, meeting at 4.30pm, flash freeze at 5pm. Find all the details here.

2. Check out the razzle-dazzle of the May Carnival at the Faculty of Social Sciences! There’s live music, competitions and whatnot: find the full program and other details here. ESN HYY will be present hosting a multilingual karaoke (5pm–10pm) – come sing with us! May 9, 2pm–10pm.

3. Top off the day with the ESN bbq & pool party at the rooftop terrace of LeBonk! May 9, 10pm–4am. Free entrance all night, student-friendly prices and barbecue until midnight.

Erasmus 25th Birthday FLASH FREEZE

It’s the 25th Anniversary of the Erasmus program and ESN is celebrating with a Flash Freeze.

All over Finland at the exact same time international and Finnish students freeze for two minutes in one of the most visible events ESN has ever created in Finland!

In Helsinki we will meet for the Flash Freeze at the Päärautatieasema (Central Railway Station) on Wednesday 9.5 at 4.30pm, and punctually at 5pm we will hear a whistle and freeze for 2 minutes. After those two minutes everybody starts to sing birthday song with lyrics “happy birthday dear Erasmus”. Come and surprise the people of Helsinki with an Erasmus Spirit :D

Vappu (1st of May) is just around the corner, and we all know what that means – crazy parties, freaky events and all things fun! Here are some ideas for things to do during the vappu season. Whatever you do and wherever you go, remember to eat a tippaleipä (one should never miss an opportunity to eat a pastry that looks like brain) and buy yourself a balloon (because, as Winnie the Pooh puts it, “No one can be uncheered with a balloon”).

1. ESN PRE-VAPPU. Get in the mood for vappu with ESN! April 24, 8pm–2am, entrance 3 €, at the New Student House (Mannerheimintie 5A).

2. MP3 Experiment. First experience with music, then have a rocking picnic! April 25, 4pm onwards, free entrance, at the Three Smiths Statue in front of Stockmann & picnic in the Väinämöinen park.

3. Akateeminen Wartti. The freakiest relay race you ever saw and great carnival atmosphere! April 26, 4pm onwards, free entrance, at the Senate Square.

4. Club Makea PRE-VAPPU. April 27, 9pm–4am, tickets 7–15 €, at Kaivohuone (Iso Puistotie 1). The event is likely to be sold out, so get your tickets in advance here.

5. LatinBoat. Hop on board of the legendary latin boat Wäiski and come dance to the beat of the latest latin hits and the greatest party classics! April 27, 21pm–3am, entrance 4 € + coatroom, at Wäiski (Hakaniemenranta 11).

6. Sitsit competition. Gather a group of friends, come up with a theme and join all the other teams in competing for who has the best sitsit! April 28, 2pm–6pm, entrance free, in Otaniemi (check the map in the FB event). Sign up by April 27!

7. Kuppalan PreWappu. Doughnuts to eat, drinks to drink, a Beer Pong competition and otherwise just general merry-making! April 29, 12noon onwards, entrance free, at Kuppala (Where is that? Check the map in the FB event.)

8. Hämiksen Wappu. Perhaps the most legendary Vappu-party! April 30, 9pm–4am, tickets 8–12 € (12 € if you’re not a member of Hämis), at Hämäläis-Osakunta (Urho Kekkosen katu 4–6). This party is really popular so buy you tickets in advance at the office of Hämäläis-Osakunta (the address above, go through a gateway to the courtyard, then climb up to the 3rd floor. Open 1pm–6pm on weekdays.)

Vappu Allianssi. April 30, 9pm onwards, tickets 8 € in advance, 10 € at the door, at Gloria (Pieni Roobertinkatu 12). To buy a ticket, check the times and places of the advance selling in the FB event.

Tivolin Wappu. April 30, 8pm–4am, tickets 10 € in advance, 12 € at the door, at Tivoli (Fredrikinkatu 51–53). To buy a ticket, check the times and places of the advance selling in the FB event.

9. Vappu with ESN. With ESN you’ll be sure not to miss out on any important vappu traditions! We start with a picnic and seeing the capping of the Havis Amanda statue on April 30 and continue on May 1 with the  traditional, you-do-not-want-to-miss-this-no-matter-how-bad-your-hangover-from-the-night-before-is picnic in Kaivopuisto!

Attention, awesome party people!

Vappu is coming up and THAT, if something, is reason to celebrate! But it’s not the ONLY reason! Our beloved mascot, Vilho has a birthday!

Join us for some great party rocking next Tuesday, April 24th, from 8 p.m. onwards at the New Student House, Alina (Mannerheimintie 5 A, 3rd. floor)! In addition to great company, great music and great ESN spirit we have prepared some birthday programme. :) And what would a birthday party be without snacks and drinks? Especially the first two hours will be veeeery HAPPY.

1. April 2, meeting of the ESN committee at 7pm in Sparre (New Student House, Mannerheimintie 5 A, at the Student Union office). Come with questions, comments or just because you’re curious! Everybody’s welcome.

2. April 3, help desk 6pm–6.30pm in Flora (New Student House, Mannerheimintie 5 B, 3rd floor). Be there to:
–sign up and pay for the hiking trip to Nuuksio (see point 4 in the newsletter)
–buy an ESN overall patch (2 €)! Vappu (the 1st of May) is coming, get ready and decorate your overalls now! ;)

3. A delicious ESN Tuesday hangout ahead on April 3: it’ll be all about wine & cheese! Bring a bottle of wine together with friends and we’ll provide the cheese. And together we’ll munch away! 6.30pm–9pm in Flora (New Student House, Mannerheimintie 5 B, 3rd floor).

4. Here’s a little something for all nature lovers: a hike in the national park of Nuuksio on April 15! During the hike lead by the Helsinki University Scouts you will not only get to enjoy the Finnish nature, you’ll learn plenty about it – and make and eat your lunch around a campfire! There are places for 20 hikers – come sign up and pay for the hike (5 €) at our help desk on April 3. Find all the details here.

HIKING DAY TO NUUKSIO NATIONAL PARK ON SUNDAY 15.4!

ESN – HYY is organizing hiking day to Nuuksio National Park in corporation with Helsinki University Scouts, HYDE!

Come along to enjoy of real nature just outside Helsinki to Nuuksio National Park with HYDE, Scouts from University of Helsinki! During the hiking day we will hike about 10 kilometres on a slow pace and we will have breaks on the way. During the hike we will learn about Finnish nature, everyman’s rights and camping, we will have a campfire with sausages and pancakes (of course you can also bring your own marshmallows along!). The trip costs only 5 Euros and there are 20 places for eager hikers.

WHEN?

ON SUNDAY 15.4.

We will take a train around 10:30 from Helsinki central railway station and we will be back around 18:30 – 19:00.

WHAT?

-You will have an introduction to the everyman’s rights and Finnish nature and you will learn a bit about history of Nuuksio National Park
- about 10 km’s hike in the National Park on a slow pace

- Making of the campfire and help to use camping cookers (trangias)

- A break with a campfire, sausages, pancakes and trangia-made coffee or tea
- Orienteering exercise, mushroom, berry and plant identification along the hike

HOW TO SIGN UP?

Come to our next Tuesday helpdesk 3.4. at the New Student House (Mannerheimintie 5) in the staircase B in the meeting room FLORA at 18:00 – 18:30.

Please bring the payment in even money if possible. After the signing up join our Tuesday Hangout for some quality time with ESN!

NOTE that the fee of 5 Euros DOESN’T include transport to the National Park; you have to pay your own region ticket for Espoo trains and buses.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A HIKE?

* Good shoes (it is always damp in the woods during spring)
* Backpack (Equipment, such as lunch and trangias, is shared to everybody’s back bags and brought along together)
* Water bottle or a mug

* Comfortable clothes for the hike (check out the weather during the morning)
* Warm clothes for the break
* Cash / travel card in which you have money or paid the region fee.

NOTE that you also have to have valid insurance, since we don’t offer it.

2. The spring is just around the corner and the snow is melting as we speak, so these are the last days to enjoy any winter activities! Before saying bye bye to the winter, ESN Tuesday hangout goes ice skating for one last time – this time to the Icepark right next to the railway station. Ticket to the Icepark 3 € for students (remember to bring your student card!), skate rental 5 €. March 13, meeting in front of the New Student House (Mannerheimintie 5 A) at 6.30pm.
