1. Doctoral Student Position

A doctoral student  position is available at the department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. The project, is principally focused on a pathogenomic analysis of factors controlling pathogenicity in the root and butt rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum. Heterobasidion annosum is a major pathogen of conifer trees, in the north temperate regions of the world. Economic losses to forestry industry due to Heterobasidion annosum infection in the Nordic countries is estimated at 100 – 200 million euros yearly. The primary aim of the project is to provide a mechanistic understanding of factors controlling pathogenicity in this conifer pathogen.

Applications from candidates with master’s degree in fungal or plant molecular biology and physiology, biochemistry or genetics, ecology or applied areas are welcome. Possession of skills in molecular biology will be an advantage.
