Courses and thesis topics in Forest soil science
Forest soil science is taught in its own courses and also as integrated in many forest ecology courses.. From 2015 autumn, it has been possible to specialise in forest soil science in an own study line within in the M.Sc studies by selective courses, literature and M.Sc thesis topic. See detailed description below.

Ajoitus: III periodi, vuosittain.
Metsämaahan liittyvät metsänhoidon ja –käsittelyn toimenpiteet kiertoajan eri vaiheissa (esim. lannoitus, harvennushakkuu, päätehakkuu, jatkuva kasvatus, biomassan koneellinen korjuu, maanmuokkaus, puulajivalinta, kylvö, istutus, luontainen uudistaminen). Toimenpiteiden kasvupaikkaedellytykset ja maaperälliset ympäristövaikutukset.
Vastuuopettaja: Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari
Forest ecosystem biogeochemistry (FOR-228, earlier code MET210) 5 cp
Timing: I period, annually.
Content: Biogeochemical processes (e.g. deposition, weathering, N fixation, uptake, transport, retranslocation, litterfall, decomposition, leaching of elements), hydrological cycles, and the use of empirical and simulation models. Emphasis is on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and mineral nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, P) but micronutrients will also be covered. Research data will be used to calculate, present and evaluate element budgets for boreal forest ecosystems in different environments and under different management, especially forest bioenergy.
Responsible teacher: Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari. Several visiting teachers.
Course is given in English.
Forest soil and root ecology (FOR-230, earlier code MET211) 5 op
Timing: III period, even years.
Contents: Physico-chemical environment of organic and mineral soil as a habitat. Soil food web, including living, dead and decomposing belowground vegetation and aboveground litter, soil fauna and microbes and their interactions. Organism groups, their abundancies, functional role and habitat requirements. Dynamics of tree and understorey roots and rhizomes and their mycorrhizas and mycelia in carbon and nutrient cycling and water uptake in different types (species, site) of forest ecosystems, and under different climatic and environmental impacts.
Responsible teacher Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari.
Course is given in English.

Thesis in Forest soil science?
Master and Ph.D theses have been done in recent years in different research projects. Our wide international networks enable theses also abroad.
We are a part of the Nordic doctoral study network “SoilSoc – Nordic Network on Soils and Society”. This network organises Nordic courses which can be included in the Ph.D studies in forest soil science.
