Comparative perspectives on political science and gender

The Finnish political science association (FPSA) is organising an international conference in Helsinki together with the University of Helsinki Faculty of Sociel Sciences, International Political Science Association (IPSA), and the Nordic Political Science Association (NoPSA).

The focus of the conference is to reflect on the current state of political science and gender studies from the perspectives of globalisation and/or its effects on Nordic societies. In addition to recent economic crisis, the increasing migration and multiculturalism in Nordic societies as well as the rise of support for populist parties bring challenges and new insights for both political decision-making and political science as a discipline.

The organisers warmly welcome scholars and students as well other participants interested in the topics.

Date: December 12-14, 2013
Place: Unioninkatu 37, Helsinki

The participants are requested to register at https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/45982/lomake.html by December 2.

Registration fee is 100 euros for representatives of outside organisations (i.e. participants who are not members of any national political science association).

Comparative perspectives on political science and gender

Helsinki, December 12–14, 2013

The focus of the conference is to reflect on the current state of political science and gender studies from the perspectives of globalisation and/or its effects on Nordic societies. In addition to recent economic crisis, the increasing migration and multiculturalism in Nordic societies as well as the rise of support for populist parties bring challenges and new insights for both political decision-making and political science as a discipline.

The two main perspectives of the conference emerge from IPSA research committees. The more specific issues will be outlined within workshops and roundtables including gender equality, political representation and gender, and challenges for linguistic and cultural minorities in the ages of globalisation. Moreover, the influence of the turn towards commercial values within higher education and novel educational policies on political science will be addressed.

The conference is organised in cooperation between the International Political Science Association (IPSA), the Nordic Political Science Association (NoPSA) and the Finnish Political Science Association (FPSA). The organizers welcome papers examining topics related to study of political science and gender and politics either from Nordic or comparative perspectives as well as papers studying Nordic politics in general.

The deadline for paper proposals is September 30, 2013. Proposals addressing political science as a discipline should be submitted to the chair of RC33, Erkki Berndtson (erkki.berndtson@helsinki.fi) and proposals on gender and politics to vice-chair of RC19, Anne Maria Holli (anne.holli@helsinki.fi). The more general paper proposals on Nordic politics are submitted to the president of the FPSA, Hanna Wass (hanna.wass@helsinki.fi).

More information is available on the conference website (https://blogs.helsinki.fi/fpsaconference2013/) or from the conference assistant, Ms. Paula Romanainen (fpsa-conference@helsinki.fi).
