Introduction to fluid inclusion studies

Schedule and syllabus

1st day, morning 9.00 – 12.00
1. Introduction to the course – 1 hr
Principles, terminology, strategies and aims of fluid inclusion studies
2. Fluid inclusion petrography (lecture) – 2 hrs
Sample preparation. Methods of petrography. Classifications of fluid inclusions according to phase compositions and origin. Inclusions’ entrapment from homogeneous and heterogeneous systems.

1st day, afternoon 13.00 – 17.00
3. Phase diagrams of the most common types of fluids in the Earth’s crust and microthermometric behaviour of fluid inclusions I.: H2O-salt systems – 2 hrs
4. Types of fluids in the Earth’s crust: analysis of phase equilibria and microthermometric behaviour fluid inclusions II.: C-O-H-N -salt systems – 2 hrs

2nd day, morning 9.00-12.00
5. Types of fluids in the Earth’s crust: analysis of phase equilibria and microthermometric behaviour fluid inclusions II.: C-O-H-N -salt systems. (cont.) -2 hrs
6. Post-entrapment modifications of fluid inclusions. – 1 hr

2nd day, afternoon 13.00 – 17.00
7. Fluid inclusion petrography (classwork, microscope ) – 4 hr
Laboratory practice on recognition of fluid inclusions in thin sections and double polished sections, practicing classifications of fluid inclusions, mapping of fluid inclusion assemblages, interpretation of petrography observations.

3rd day, morning 9.00-12.00
8. Non-destructive and destructive instrumental analysis of individual fluid inclusions and bulk analysis of fluid inclusion bearing mineral samples  – 2 hrs
9. Fluid inclusions in hydrothermal ore deposits  – 1 hrs

11. Fluid inclusions in metamorphic rocks. Application of fluid inclusion studies in structural geology and nuclear waste disposal projects – 2 hrs

12. Fluid inclusion data presentation, calculations for data interpretation  (classwork, PC) –3 hrs

4th day, afternoon 13.00 – 17.00
13. Project work. Reading and preparation of a short presentation in the selected subject.

5th day, morning 9.00-12.00
14. Presentations by students in the selected subjects of project works, summary and closing discussion  -3 hours
