Short Course: Dating Methods in Geology

A short course on dating methods will be arranged in connection with the Geological Colloquium in Oulu.

Pre-colloquium short course will be held in March 4.-5., 2013.

The one and a half day short course will introduce the basic theory of the radioactive decay and how it is used in dating geological objects. The following radioactive-radiogenic systems will be discussed in more detail: Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os and U-Th-Pb. The course also covers sampling and sample preparation, mass spectrometry, and data handling and gives examples of age determinations mainly from the Fennoscandian Shield. The last part of the course is devoted to the Quaternary dating methods applied to absolute dating of organic and non-organic sediments.
