Speech Limits in Public Life: At the Intersection of Free Speech and Hate

The University of Delaware held a public event on March 14 and 15, 2019 about the intersection of hate speech and freedom of speech. The event had a big list of keynote speakers and different kinds of panel discussions took place. The aim of the whole event was to encourage discussion about hate speech, freedom of speech, and to know where the line goes between them.

Uusfilologisen yhdistyksen järjestämässä esitelmätilaisuudessa torstaina 30.3. klo 16.15 (Helsingin yliopiston Metsätalo, Unioninkatu 40, 5. krs, sali 25) luennoivat seuraavat nuoret tutkijat:

  • Henrik Oksanen (Tampereen yliopisto): “Pragmaattisten elementtien vaikutuksia lause- ja tekstirakenteisiin saksan- ja suomenkielisissä juridisissa teksteissä”
  • Jenna-Marie Eskola (Helsingin yliopisto): “Verbaalisen väkivallan paikantaminen ja analysointi paheksuvien puheaktien avulla”
  • Sirkku Ruokkeinen (Turun yliopisto): “Irrealis evaluaation keinona 1500-luvun Englannissa”

Erityisesti Jenna-Marie Eskolan esitelmä, joka pohjautuu hänen tekeillä olevaan graduunsa, on relevantti kaikille vihapuheesta ja verbaalisesta väkivallasta kiinnostuneille. Tilaisuuteen on vapaa pääsy, eikä ennakkoilmoittautumista tarvita.

“Pyhistä kirjoituksista vihapuheeseen” – Tiedekulma 1.12.

Helsingin yliopiston Tiedekulmassa (Aleksanterinkatu 7) järjestetään torstaina 1.12. klo 16:30-18 tilaisuus “Pyhistä kirjoituksista vihapuheeseen – digitaalista teologian tutkimusta”. The FIN-CLARIN Jubilee Seminar and the Nordic CLARIN Network Seminar (9-10 June) will be held at Metsätalo (Unioninkatu 40), room 1, Helsinki. The main topic of the Nordic CLARIN Network Seminar is sentiment analysis and related resources. These topics may be interesting for those who study hate speech and related issues. The presentations include, among others:

  • KeyNote: Sentiment Waves in Social Media (Krista Lagus, University of Helsinki)
  • EmoTwitter – Emotion Analysis on Social Media (Calkin Suero Montero, University of Eastern Finland)
  • Finnish sentiment analysis and a tool for social media tracking (Arto Kivinen, Turku University of Applied Sciences)
