Apart from the topic of my current research project there are four other themes which I keep on working with.
The performative space of webcams – the visual representations of the material realm in the virtual realm on the Internet; webcam self-presentation as resistance and ‘the other side of surveillance’; the liminal spaces ‘in-between’ the material and the virtual.
Surveillance and visual control – video surveillance and the changing nature of urban space; surveillance as an emotional experience; the use of surveillance tapes in the media and on the Internet; ‘voluntary’ surveillance, counter-surveillance and citizen participation.
Urban security politics – various local, national and international security strategies and laws which aim to increase safety; the on-going debate between ‘culture of prejudice’ and ‘culture of tolerance’; the development of exclusion zones and ‘the architecture of fear’.
Urban subcultures – confrontations in urban space; cultural criminology and the micro-geographies of exclusion; criminalization of the graffiti movement, animal liberation activism and other subcultures.
Emotional spaces – the ‘elastic spaces’ of gendered fear of violence; the semiotics of urban danger; sexual harassment and resistance strategies against it; street prostitution and prostitution related harassment.
