Yesterday I visited a Christian community in a slum. Sadly a majority of Christians live in slums here without opportunities. Drugs and alcoholism are major problems. I will upload pics to Facebook later.

Later I was taken to the murder place of Shahbaz Bhatti by his relative. He was a Christian minister for minorities who opposed Pakistan’s blasphemy laws that are misused against Christians. I saw the place and I saw the bullet holes. There have been cases when a neighbor has wrongly accused a Christian of insulting Islam in order to get the property. Then the police simply picks you up. Maximum penalty is death but there have been no executions. However, last year 20 were murdered after charges of blasphemy by mobs.

Pakistan is among the most dangerous countries for minorities, in top ten. And the rank has only increased after 9/11. Killings after killings.

But again, certain areas are much more dangerous. Hindus and some Muslim sects have been suffering too.

I heard things were better in the 70’s. In fact the white stripe in the Pakistani flag represents minorities.

About Pan Hao

Theology and economics student doing an internship with a local NGO in Pakistan. I wanted to come to Pakistan to see an Islamic country, learn more about Islam and politics in this area, see NGO's work from inside and hopefully help the poor. And because Pakistan is Pakistan:)
