I had my first day on the field. This NGO has a project with Plan International to work in rural communities. Ok, this is still a bit unclear for me. They form forums or groups in communities, and educate them about their rights, community development and social issues and these groups have a kind of mentor by the NGO. And they have captains and vice captains :D

Basically these groups are just told their rights and built their capacity and then they function on their own.

I was impressed by a teen age girl forum in a poor community. As girls they face quite a lot discouragement. They have been spreading awareness of child and female rights, done volunteer work such as cleaning and educated the community on social issues. They got three children into school and one of the girls in the group was inspired to learn to read.

But not everyone likes their work. In this society is not approved that girls move around in houses on their own. When the girls get older, the parents no longer approve of them going out without family or trusted companion and they are taken away from the group.

I was quite impressed of their determination and I donated a small amount of money for them.

About Pan Hao

Theology and economics student doing an internship with a local NGO in Pakistan. I wanted to come to Pakistan to see an Islamic country, learn more about Islam and politics in this area, see NGO's work from inside and hopefully help the poor. And because Pakistan is Pakistan:)
