Suurkaupungin kerrostumat
– humanistista kaupunkitutkimusta Helsingin yliopistossa

Miten suurkaupunkia esitetään ja on esitetty eri aikoina?

Minkälaista kaupunkikansalaisuutta suurkaupungit tuottavat?

Miten poliittiset, sosiaaliset, kulttuuriset ja kielelliset
identiteetit muovautuvat ja muuttuvat suurkaupungeissa?

Miten elinkeinot, työ ja vapaa-aika heijastuvat kaupunkien ja niiden
asukkaiden arjessa eri aikoina?

Layered Cities – Urban studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki

How has the metropolis been portrayed and is portrayed in different times?

What kind of citizenship is produced in a metropolis?

How are political, social, cultural and linguistic identities changed and reshaped in a metropolis?

How are industries, work and leisure-time reflected in the everyday of a metropolis and its citizen in different times?

How are cite-specific meanings created (names, narrations)?

Layered Cities is a multidisciplinary research project that aims at strengthening the cooperation between Urban studies researchers at the Faculty of Arts.

Urban studies at the Faculty of Arts emphasize the historical dimension of the city and its urban sub layers. The point of departure for the project is the aim at presenting the city in all its ambiguity; it is to say, the opening and understanding of different perspectives, be they social, political or cultural.

The aim of the project is also to attract more awareness to the ongoing research projects and their different ways of approaching the cityscape.

A humanistic approach to urban studies encompasses different academic disciplines and subjects like linguistics, history, ethnology, art history, art research, cultural and literature history as well as political history.

Key themes are citizenship, the city as the environment for work and business and the politics of remembrance. The focus lies on the metropolis as a performed space as well as the changing urban identities and the way they are portrayed through language and literature. A special emphasis will be given to Helsinki and its metropolis area.

Both the positive and the negative notions connected to cities and citizenship are reflected in the metropolis.
