Alumni Event (page)

The Networking and Alumni Event was held in the Päärakennus UniCafe in the Main Building of the University on the 26th of April 2017 from 5pm-8pm. The event was recorded for our partner program in Dijon so that they can profit from the information as well. Check out the whole panel discussion here!

The program was built around two main ideas: A panel discussion and a networking section.

The panel

The panel discussion provided information for the current ICE students, as well as other international students on how to transition into work life as a non-Finnish speaker.

This section was especially important for the program since the University of Helsinki offers a number of international study programs, and the students need to know what the Finnish labor market expects from graduates and where they can find jobs that do not require Finnish skills on a professional level.

To give personal information about the transition from being an ICE student to work in a full-time job, Jana Turk was invited to tell about her experience and her current job at Moniheli.

The second speaker was Daniel Beech, who talked about his experience of finding work in Finland as an English speaker and his work for IESAF (International English Speaking Association of Finland).

The third person on the panel was Noel Cavernelis, a teacher at the International School of Vantaa, who found his career without the need of Finnish skills in the educational sector.

The last two panelists, Hamed Shafae from Virka Info, and Tapani Varis from Posti Union, were invited to give advice on where to get help and inform about the role of Unions in Finland.

The Panel was moderated by Jeffrey Rukoro, who asked the panelist questions on their personal experience of living and working in Finland and the role of networking.

Networking turned out to be an important topic in the discussion since all participants of the panel talked about the value of having a personal network in Finland in order to find a job.

The Networking section

The role of networking was not only part of the panel discussion, but was also the theme of the second part of the event. In addition to the panelists, who represented their company, other representatives were invited to meet interested students and participants of the event. Dora Puhakka came to talk to interested students about her workplace Nicehearts. Yared Tsega represented AIESEC and gave students the chance to gather information about the organization and the possibility of internships.

The UniCafe also provided some coffee, water, and piirakka and everybody had a chance to mingle with representatives of the organization or company he or she was interested in.

We would like to thank everybody for coming and hope that you found the information you needed and made some new contacts!
