Careers in Cultural and Arts Promotion

On March 22 2017 we hosted a panel discussion featuring professionals in the field of cultural and arts promotion. The discussion flowed freely and audience questions were abundant. After the more formal portion of the event was complete, we stuck around talking and mingling until we were kicked out of the room by the next group needing the space! So it’s safe to say connections were made and valuable advice was shared.

Top tips gleaned:

  • Network, network, network!! Your contacts are your strongest asset.
  • Put yourself out there: you won’t make connections from your sofa.
  • Connections will come from unexpected places, not just formal networking events.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix business with pleasure. Talk with your friends – they’re probably a mine of information if you dare to ask. Their experiences and mistakes can guide you in the right direction.
  • Volunteering is a great way to meet people and get practical work experience, not to mention fill out your CV.
  • Working for yourself is also an option! Finland has great resources for startups including entrepreneur classes and funds to get started, so don’t think it’s impossible (These are arranged by the TE office).
  • Think outside the box – what skills do you have? What kinds of companies could benefit from your expertise?
