Visit to Caisa

On March 15th we vistited the Caisa cultural center in Kaisaniemi. Multicultural training and Caisa’s course activities producer Ogechukwu Eneh gave us a tour of the facilities and explained Caisa’s mission.

There are multiple ways of integrating foreign population into the host society. Art, music, workshops and events where the majority’s culture would encounter the minority’s culture in an entertaining way and see the ambiguity and beauty of world cultures are one of the means of helping the integration. That is one of the strategies that the cultural center Caisa chose and is successfully bringing to life together with foreign artists who are living in Helsinki, but are not yet recognized or known by the local audience.

The integration process is a process of mutual change, thus the dialogue between people and cultural exchange is essential. Over the last few decades Finland, and especially the capital area, is experiencing an increasing number of immigrants. Caisa is the place where they have an opportunity not only to express their talents and find their artistic voice, but also a place where they can begin their artistic career in Helsinki. The cultural center also provides different courses both for adults and children, workshops, hobby groups. Moreover, Caisa is a place where different immigrant groups can gather to get support, meet each other, practice their native language with their kids, among many other activities.
