Shaking the city from the bottom-up. Ideologies and practices in the making of a pro-active urbanity

Short abstract

In examining motivations, practices and contemplations of city dwellers’ active involvement with their local surroundings, the aim of this panel is to define the notion of a ‹pro-active urbanity›, as well as to outline different values, meanings and consequences that might relate to this concept.

Long abstract

People in different urban areas are, as it seems in more progressive ways than before, taking responsibility for the physical as well as social environments they live in. Thus many city dwellers try eagerly to cope and deal with a diversity of local developments that affect them. From little activities such as collecting garbage while jogging (‹plogging›) to bigger and more politically motivated meetings in their neighbourhood, people try dynamically to change and shape their surroundings towards what they think a good and including city should or could be like.

In this panel we focus on revealing and analysing the practices as well as hopes and thoughts of the people that engage in what we would like to call a ‹pro-active urbanity›. Furthermore, we want to discuss different perspectives and ideologies related with that concept. We welcome papers dealing with a variety of questions such as why or when people get enthusiastic and start directly to engage in or with their local settings. How do people make sense of their (more or less politically) influencing position and how are they organized for realizing their aspirations? What dilemmas do people possibly have to face with their activities? Furthermore we invite papers that offer insights into the effects of such engagements and self-organized activities on peoples’ sense of place as well as on their sense of community, hence opening up for another set of questions and reflections regarding the formation of new or alternative forms of groups and communities that arise along with these activities.

Itä-Helsinki asukkaiden silmin 16.4.-22.4.2018

Meidän itä on Helsingin kaupunginmuseon osallistava pop up -näyttely Itä-Helsingissä. Valokuvanäyttely esittelee vuosaarelaisille ja kontulalaisille tärkeitä paikkoja ja niihin liittyviä tarinoita. Se on kuvaus siitä, millainen Itä-Helsinki on siellä asuvien silmin. Näyttelyn materiaali on kerätty kevättalvella 2018 järjestetyillä kaupunkikävelyillä, joissa osallistujat kertoivat heille tärkeistä paikoista, kuvasivat niitä ja tulivat itse kuvatuiksi niistä.

Humakin yhteisöpedagogit kentällä

Me, Humakin yhteisöpedagogiopiskelijat, saimme ainutlaatuisen mahdollisuuden osallistua Jaettu kaupunki -hankkeeseen, jota johtaa professori Pia Olsson. Tehtävänämme oli kerätä tietoa pääasiassa maahanmuuttajataustaisten nuorten kokemuksista heitä ympäröivistä ympäristöistä Helsingin ja Vantaan alueilla. Etsimme tietoa nuorten ja nuorten aikuisten näkemyksistä heille tutuista alueista – mikä ympäristössä miellyttää, mikä ei. Jakauduimme 4-5 hengen ryhmiin ja perehdyimme neljään eri paikkaan, jotka olivat Kontula, Myyrmäki, Kamppi ja Vuosaari.

Keräsimme nuorilta tietoa etnografisella otteella, kuten haastattelemalla, havainnoimalla, osallistamalla ja käyttämällä kaupunkikävely-menetelmää. Menetelmät vaihtelivat paikasta, ajasta ja tilanteesta riippuen. Tästä yhteistyöstä hyötyivät molemmat osapuolet, sillä tämä oli meille loistava mahdollisuus harjoitella etnografista kenttätyötä. Niitä taitoja tarvitaan mahdollisesti lopputyötä eli opinnäytetyötä varten. Jaettu kaupunki -hanke puolestaan sai kaipaamaansa tutkimusmateriaalia. Menetelmävalintaan kunkin ryhmän osalta vaikutti se, kuinka saisimme tuloksista myös visuaalisen näytön tallennettaviksi hankkeen yhden yhteistyökumppanin, museon, seinien sisään.

Meidän ryhmämme keskittyi Vuosaaren alueen nuoriin. Suurin osa haastatteluista tapahtui Vuosaaren metroaseman ja Columbus-kauppakeskuksen alueella. Haastattelu toteutettiin enimmäkseen vertaishaastattelujen kautta, mikä oli nuorille mielekästä, sillä he voivat keskustella vertaistensa kanssa ilman haastattelutilanteen aiheuttamaa jännitystä. Nuorista välittyi sellainen kuva, että he viihtyvät Vuosaaressa todella hyvin. He kokivat Vuosaaren mukavana paikkana asua ja elää.

Kaiken kaikkiaan, kokemus oli meille positiivinen. Meistä oli mukavaa olla mukana näin monipuolisessa hankkeessa ja olemme iloisia siitä, että saimme olla avuksi tälle hankkeelle. Koemme, että yhteisöpedagogin työkalupakkimme on entistä monipuolisempi tämän kokemuksen myötä. Nyt odotamme innolla, minkälaisia tuotoksia museoon saadaan nähtäville.

Ethnographic knowledge in political decision-making – what’s the point?

We are organizing a session related to the topics of our research project in the NEFK2018 conference in Uppsala. The call for papers is open until the 15th of January, 2018.

Ethnographic knowledge in political decision-making – what’s the point?

Ethnographic research is often presented in a way that may not open up to readers outside our field as it does to those more familiar with the conventions of ethnographic writing. We have a tendency to explain issues we have studied in a very complex and multidimensional way when trying to provide the reader with as much information as possible to reason for our case in question. Ethnographic research, by its very nature, calls for a holistic approach towards what we are focusing on in our studies, but it may be difficult to sum up our most important arguments. So should we pay more attention to practices and means of presenting ethnographic knowledge, especially when we are dealing with parties outside the academia?

In a world of “alternative facts” it is important “get out there” with what we are doing. Ethnographic knowledge can open up new perspectives and offer invaluable insights on issues being discussed and decided in the field of politics but how can we promote it in a way that is more focused, e.g. easier to grasp for those not so familiar with ethnographic writing. How can we make our knowledge and ways of producing it more easily available and better achievable in the context of decision making?

We welcome papers presenting experiences and practices of making good use of ethnographic knowledge for the benefit of the society at large, whether in social services, integration policies, urban planning or health care, to name a few examples. Papers discussing how application of ethnographic knowledge in contexts other than academia affects the research process in general are invited as well in this session.
