From rocks to powder / Kivistä pölyksi

Visit to WSU GeoAnalytical Lab in early April 2017

In order to analyze rocks chemically, the samples first have to be crushed to chips with a jaw crusher and then further milled to fine homogeneous powder using a vibrating swing mill. The PI visited Washington State University’s Peter Hooper GeoAnalytical Lab in Pullman WA, in which he had analyzed dozens of samples from his previous projects. The PI was kindly assisted and instructed by PhD candidate Ashley Steiner (below) and technician Luke Steenberg (above). A few Antarctic gabbro and wallrock basalt samples were powdered and split to two aliquots. The other one will be analyzed for major and trace elements in WSU and the other one will be sent to Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas, for Nd isotopic analysis. More on these later!

Jotta kiviä voidaan analysoida kemiallisesti, näytteet täytyy ensin murskata siruiksi leukamurskaimella ja tämän jälkeen jauhaa jauheeksi tärisevällä swing-myllyllä. PI vieraili laboratoriossa Pullmanissa (Washington State University’s Peter Hooper GeoAnalytical Lab), johon hän on lähettänyt runsaasti näytteitä myös aikaisemmissa projekteissaan. PI:n apuna ja ohjaajina olivat väitöskirjaopiskelija Ashely Steiner (alla) ja teknikko Luke Steenberg (yllä). Muutama näyte Antarktiksen intruusioista ja niiden basalttisista sivukivistä jauhettiin ja jauheet jaettiin näytekohtaisesti kahteen eri näytepurkkiin. Toinen analysoidaan pää- ja hivenalkuaineiden osalta Pullmanissa ja toinen lähetetään Teksasiin (Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas) neodyymi-isotooppianalyyseja varten. Näistä lisää myöhemmin!
