Antarctic samples retrieved / Etelämantereen näytteet kaivettu

PI and Arto Luttinen spent most of yesterday finding the samples related to the Antarctic intrusions (Muren and Utpostane, Vestfjella) from the geological collections of the Finnish Museum of Natural History (Luomus) in the basement of the Kumpula campus. PI also got a load of thin sections from him. There has been quite a lot of work done on the chemistry and mineral composition of the intrusions by Mika Räisänen and Saku Vuori (both today working at the Geological Survey of Finland), but we concentrated on finding samples related to the intrusive contacts with the basaltic wallrocks. We were fortunate enough to recover everything we wanted. It was not too easy, however, because many of the samples have been collected already 20 years ago and have changed their resting place for several times! Happy holidays to everyone!
