The first set of melting experiments on the wallrocks of the Duluth intrusive complex have been completed by Ville! The experiments were conducted at ETH Zürich using special pressurized furnaces. In the experiments we emplaced gold-palladium capsules (with a diameter of 2.3 to 3.0 mm and length of 6-10mm) containing black schist powder to the furnace, which was then melted in the desired run conditions that ranged from 700 to 1100°C and from 1 to 2 kbar (roughly corresponding to depth of 4 to 8 km in Earth’s crust in contact with hot mafic magma). Next we are going to use electron microprobe to analyze chemical compositions of the melts and crystals that formed in different conditions. We will also see if we achieved chemical equilibrium in our experiments. It will be interesting to see, how black schist behaved in such harsh conditions!

Ensimmäiset sulatuskokeet Duluthin magmakivikompleksin sivukiville on nyt tehty Villen toimesta! Kokeet suoritettiin ETH Zürichissä käyttämällä tarkoitukseen sopivia paineistettuja erikoisuuneja. Kokeissa laitoimme mustaliuskejauhetta uuniin kulta-palladium –kapseleissa (ympärysmitta 2,3–3,0 mm ja pituus 6–10 mm) ja sulatimme sitä halutuissa olosuhteissa eli 700-1100°C lämpötilassa ja 1-2 kbar:n paineessa (joka vastaa karkeasti arvioiden 4-8 km:n syvyyttä maan kuoressa kuuman mafisen magmasäiliön läheisyydessä). Seuraavaksi aiomme analysoida eri olosuhteissa syntyneiden sulien ja mineraalien kemialliset koostumukset käyttämällä elektronimikroproobia. Samalla näemme saavutimmeko kemiallisen tasapainotilan kokeissamme. On mielenkiintoista nähdä, miten mustaliuske on käyttäytynyt sille näin ikävissä olosuhteissa!

Visit to the ETHZ labs / Vierailu ETHZ:n laboratorioihin
PI was hosted by project collaborator prof. Max Schmidt at the Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Insitute of Techonology in Zürich (ETHZ), and got to see the experimental laboratory used in this project for the first time. With these instruments, it is possible to subject small rock powder samples to crustal pressures and magmatic temperatures, and study what happens to the sample under different conditions.
For those visiting Zürich, I would strongly recommend seeing the wonderful state-of-the art geoscientific exhibition of the Earth Science Research and Information Centre located in the same building and pictured below.

PI oli projektin yhteistyökumppanin professori Max Schmidtin vieraana Zürichissa (Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Insitute of Techonology in Zürich) ja sai ensimmäisen kosketuksen kokeelliseen laitteistoon, jota hyödynnetään projektissa.
