The majority of students in higher education in Sweden, as in Western countries more generally, are women whilst the majority of senior researchers are men. This can be taken to mirror a relatively stable power relation where men are superior. An alternative assumption is that the rise of women students over time will be followed by a corresponding rise of women in senior positions. The growing emphasis on competition and performativity is further adding to the complexity when considering the future development of gender relations in academia.
