The daily updated webzine also publishes tips for classroom activities and interesting information on the latest research results. Each of the resource centres of Finland’s Science Eduation Centre Luma, including Kemma, has a representative in the editorial board of LUMA Sanomat.

In-service Training for Teachers

Kemma Centre provides in-service training for teachers at different levels of chemistry education. The in-service training is funded by The Finnish National Board of Education. There are several different themes and goals for the in-service training courses that are arranged by the staff of Kemma  Centre and experts from different fields.

The themes for the in-service training courses include e.g. using automated measurement calculation in chemistry education, experimental chemistry education, life cycles in teaching environmental chemistry, molecular gastronomy, ICT in chemistry education, laboratory safety in chemistry education, and in-service training of novice teachers.

National Days of Chemical Education

The National Days of Chemical Education are held annually in different regions of Finland. Kemma in always one of the main organizers of the event, which brings together in-service and pre-service chemistry teachers from all over Finland to attend lectures and workshops that concentrate on the current issues in the field of chemistry education. The symposium book of chemistry education with articles regarding chemistry education from elementary to university level is published by Kemma.

Science Symposiums and Seminars

Kemma participates in organizing science symposiums and seminars in Finland and abroad. For example, the International Symposium of Science Education (ISSE) was organised by Kemma in Haikko manor, Porvoo in September 2011.

National LUMA week

The National LUMA Week is arranged by the LUMA Centre annually on November. The aim of LUMA Week is to promote knowledge in science (e.g. chemistry) and to support science teaching and learning among children, youth and general public. The week’s activities and events take place in schools, libraries, universities and other public places all over Finland.

Materials for Chemistry Education

Kemma Centre has, with Unit of Chemistry Teacher Education, a library of books, journals and other literature related to chemistry, chemistry education and chemistry education research as well as other materials that our clients, students and researchers may find useful. In addition, plenty of our materials can be found online at our website. The online materials include online publications, doctoral and master’s theses completed at the Unit of Chemistry Teacher Education, links to interesting internet sites and tips for teachers for practical work during chemistry lessons. Most of the teaching materials are only in Finnish.

ChemistryLab Gadolin

ChemistryLab Gadolin is a new learning environment supporting and developing chemistry teaching and learning. It also aims to support the positive image of chemistry and offer the educational alternatives in the field of chemistry. The class is named after Johan Gadolin (1760–1852), the founder of Finnish chemistry research and discoverer of the element Yttrium.
