Vesa-Pekka Herva

Toimin arkeologian professorina Oulun yliopistossa ja tutkimushankkeen johtajana. Tutkimukselliset kiinnostuksenkohteeni ovat moninaiset ja ulottuvat kivikautisen kulttuurinmuutoksen dynamiikasta nykypäivän kummituskokemuksiin. Tutkimusaiheitani kuitenkin yhdistää pyrkimys ymmärtää miten materiaalinen kulttuuri, ympäristö ja maailmankuva kietoutuvat toisiinsa erityisesti pohjoisilla alueilla. Olen erityisen kiinnostunut siitä, miten materiaalinen kulttuuri – olipa kyse sitten esihistoriallisista saviveistoksista, urbaaneista ympäristöistä tai toiseen maailmansotaan liittyvistä esineistä – ovat muokanneet ja muokkaavat ihmisten elämän- ja ajattelutapoja. Olen ollut vuosia mukana toisen maailmansodan kohteiden ja kulttuuriperinnön tutkimuksessa. Johdan ja koordinoin ”Lapin synkkä kulttuuriperintö” -hanketta sekä osallistun eri tavoin itse tutkimustyöhön. Tutkimukseni kohteena hankkeessa ovat etenkin arkiset, marginalisoidut ja vaihtoehtoiset tavat merkityksellistää saksalaisjoukkoihin liittyvää kulttuuriperintöä Pohjois-Suomessa. Näihin kuuluvat esimerkiksi saksalaisesineiden yksityinen keräily, saksalaiskohteiden kokeminen ja ryöstely sekä laajemmat teemat kuten natsien asema populaarikulttuurissa.

I am Professor of Archaeology at the University of Oulu and PI of the project. My research interests are broad and varied, ranging from the dynamics of Neolithization to modern-day ghosts, but unified by a desire to understand the entanglement of material cultures, environments and cosmologies especially in northern worlds. I am particularly interested in how material things – be they prehistoric clay figurines, urban environments or WWII militaria – have shaped and continue to shape people’s ways of life and thought. I have been involved in the study of WWII sites and heritage in Finland for several years. In addition to supervising and coordinating the ‘Lapland’s Dark Heritage’ project, I will contribute to several aspects of the research, especially regarding popular, subaltern and alternative perceptions of and engagements with the difficult heritage of the German military presence in northern Finland. These include the looting of German sites, private collecting of military material culture and dark tourism, as well as broader issues such as the fascination  with Nazis in popular culture.

 

Suzie Thomas

PhD Suzie Thomas on kulttuuriperinön tutkimuksen professori Helsingin yliopistossa. Ennen muuttoa Suomeen hän työskenteli yhteisöarkeologian asiantuntijana ja tutkijana Glsgown yliopiston Rikoksen ja oikeuden tutkimuskeskuksessa kulttuurin laitonta kauppaa käsittelevässä projektissa. Suzie on Journal of Community Archaeology and Heritage -aikakauslehden toinen perustaja ja päätoimittaja. Hän väitteli tohtoriksi kulttuuriperinnön tutkimuksesta New Castlen yliopistossa vuonna 2009. Tässä tutkimusprojektissa hän keskittyy erityisesti Lapin saksalaisesineiden keruuseen, etsintään ja kauppaan.

I am professor of cultural heritage studies at the University of Helsinki. Before moving to Finland, Iworked at the Council for British Archaeology as Community Archaeology Support Officer, and then as a Research Associate at the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research at the University of Glasgow. I’m a founding co-editor of the Journal of Community Archaeology and Heritage. I completed my PhD in Cultural Heritage Studies at the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies, Newcastle University, in 2009. On the Lapland’s Dark Heritage project, I’m particularly interested in researching the collecting, retrieval and trade of objects and material connected to the German presence in Lapland.

 

Eerika Koskinen-Koivisto

Olen kansatieteilijä / folkloristi ja työskentelen tutkijatohtorina Jyväskylän yliopistossa. Väittelin vuonna 2013 etnologian oppiaineessa Jyväskylän yliopiston historian ja etnologian laitoksessa. Aiemmissa tutkimuksissani olen tarkastellut 1950-luvun arkea ja ihanteita sekä työläisnaisen elämää ja kerrontaa. Minua kiinnostavat ihmisten kokemukset ja arki sodanjälkeisessä Suomessa, arjen materiaalinen ulottuvuus, sukupolvien välinen vuorovaikutus ja kertomusperinne. Edellisessä tutkimushankkeessani tein yhteistyötä museoammattilaisten kanssa. Sovellan tutkimuksessani etnografisia tutkimusmenetelmiä. Tässä hankkeessa tulen haastattelemaan paikallisia Lapin sodan jälkiä tuntevia historiaharrastajia ja keräilijöitä sekä havainnoimaan esineitä, kokoelmia ja maisemia.

I am ethnologist / folklorist and work as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki. I earned my PhD in 2013 at the Department of History and Ethnology of University of Jyväskylä. In my earlier research I have examined the everyday life and ideals of the 1950s as well as the life and narratives of a female laborer. I am interested in the everyday-life experiences of ordinary people in the post-war times, material culture, intergenerational exchange and narrative traditions. In my earlier research project I collaborated with museum professionals. In my research I operate with ethnographic methods. In this project I will interview local people about their knowledge on German sites and remains, including history hobbyists and collectors, and observe sites, objects, and landscapes of Lapland.

 

Oula Seitsonen

Olen arkeologi ja maantieteilijä, ja teen projektissa väitöskirjaani arkeologisesta näkökulmasta Hitlerin arktiseen sotaan Lapissa. Vuosien varrella olen ollut mukana monessa, aina sen mukaan mistä olen palkkani saanut: tärkeimpiä tutkimusteemojani ovat muinaisten karjanhoitajayhteisöjen arkeologia Mongoliassa ja Itä-Afrikassa, paikkatiedon ja kaukokartoituksen soveltaminen arkeologiassa, Lapin erämaa-alueiden menneisyyteen liittyvät kysymykset sekä luovutetun Karjalan arkeologia. Lisäksi olen työskennellyt esimerkiksi kenttäarkeologina, kartoittajana, kartoitusvälinemyyjänä ja paikkatietosuunnittelijana muun muassa Pohjois-Siperiassa, Alaskassa ja Norjassa. Nykyinen projekti syntyi vuonna 2009 Muotkatunturin erämaa-alueella saksalaisten toisen maailmansodan aikaisessa tukikohdassa tekemistämme arkeologisista tutkimuksista, ja on kasvanut tuosta vaatimattomasta idusta joksikin paljon suuremmaksi ja hienommaksi. Väitöskirjatutkimuksessani tulen pohtimaan arktisen sodan maisemaan jättämiä materiaalisia merkkejä sekä tapoja, joilla erilaiset yhteisöt ovat merkityksellistäneet ja hyödyntäneet niitä sodan aikana ja sen jälkeen.

I am an archaeologist and geographer, and work in the project on my PhD research about the archaeology of Hitler’s arctic war in Lapland. Through the years I have been occupied with whatever has paid my bills, most importantly on the archaeology of pastoralist societies in Mongolia and East Africa, GIS and remote sensing applications in archaeology, the past of Lapland’s wilderness areas, and the archaeology of Karelian Isthmus, Russia. I have also been acting, for instance, as a field archaeologist, cartographer, surveying equipments salesman, and GIS engineer, for example in northern Siberia, Alaska, and Norway. ‘Lapland’s Dark Heritage’ project had its origin back in 2009 in our archaeological studies of a German WWII military base in the Muotkatunturit Wilderness Area, and has grown from that humble seed into something much bigger and better. In my PhD I will be marveling the landscapes and materialities of the Arctic war, and how the various communities have related, signified and engaged with those both during and after the WWII.

 

Mirkka Hekkurainen

Olen maisterivaiheen opiskelija Helsingin yliopistossa pääaineenani kansatiede. Sivuaineina olen tähän mennessä päässyt tutustumaan museologian ja kulttuuriperinnön saloihin. Opiskelujen ohella olen töissä museossa ja vapaa-ajalla elän internetin ihmeellisessä maailmassa. Olen projektissa mukana tarkoituksenani tehdä gradu osallistavasta etnografiasta. Aineistonkeruuspurtti keskittyy kesäisiin kaivauksiin, jolloin heilun ympäri Inaria kameran, itsulitikun ja nauhurin kanssa. Osan aineistosta kerään paikan päällä, osan sosiaalisesta mediasta. I’m a post-graduate student in the University of Helsinki. I major in ethnology and so far I’ve dabbled with museum and heritage studies also. I work part-time in a museum and if I ever have free time, I spend it in the deep dark depths of the internet. I’m with the project because I’ll be working on my master’s thesis about participatory ethnography. I’m doing most of my fieldwork in Inari at the archaeological excavations. I will be running around the town with my camera, selfie-stick and a recorder trying to gather enough material for an interesting thesis locally and from the social media. You can follow up on me and the project in Facebook looking up the name Lapland’s Dark Heritage. With the help of the stick there will be plenty of pictures posted in Instagram in the account called @dig_Inari and you can post your own pictures with the #Inaridig tag. The project has been actively informing about its progress in Twitter by the name @DarkLapland, so there’s plenty of interesting material to make the time just fly by.

 

Wesa Perttola

Työskentelen yliopisto-opettajana Helsingin yliopiston arkeologian oppiaineessa. Erityisalojani ovat mm. valokuva- ja videodokumentointi, kaukokartoitus, paikkatietoanalyysit ja prospektointi.

I work as a university teacher at the Department of Archaeology, University of Helsinki. My specialties are e.g. photographic and video documentation, remote sensing, GIS analyses and prospecting.

Annukka Debenjak

Olen arkeologian opiskelija Helsingin yliopistosta. Projektissa olen mukana tekemässä arkeologista dokumentointia kesän 2017 kaivauksilla. Muistiinpanojen, valokuvien ja takymetrimittausten lisäksi teen myös 3D-malleja kaivausalueista ja kiinnostavista yksityiskohdista.

I study archaeology at the University of Helsinki. In the project I assist in the archaeological documentation of the excavation, also by 3D-modelling interesting details at the excavation site.

 

Suvi Tuominen

Olen freelance tanssitaiteilija ja työskentelen liikkujana ja koreografina erilaisissa projekteissa.
