Welcome to the home page of the Environmental Microbiota Group, operating under the Metapopulation Research Centre. We concentrate on various questions regarding the interactions between microbes (namely bacteria) and multicellular organisms. The work we do starts from building theory on the ecological and epidemiological consequences of pathogens emerging from the environment. What makes such pathogens interesting is that they are affected by biotic and abiotic factors in the environment, which can potentially influence their transmission to susceptible hosts. The role of environmental pathogens, as well as the commensal bacteria of the hosts is further tested in experimental microcosms. We also consider the influence of the living environment on the composition on host microbiota and how this might affect the functioning of the host immune system.
