SUSAN M. ELBOW assumed duty as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki in September, 2013. Prior to her posting in Helsinki, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland. A member of the U.S. Diplomatic Service since 1986, she has served as Director of the U.S. State Department’s European Regional Media Center in Brussels, Belgium; as Principal Officer in the U.S. Consulate in Hamburg, Germany; and as the Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia. She has also worked in the State Department in Washington and served in Budapest, Hungary; San Salvador, El Salvador; and Frankfurt, Germany.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Susan worked at the Port Authority of NY & New Jersey as Director of Marketing for the World Trade Center Network, a trading and communications network, linking World Trade Centers around the globe. She has an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; an M.A. from the University of Rochester; and a B.A. from Smith College. She speaks German, Hungarian, and French, and some Spanish and Serbian. A native of New York State, Susan enjoys listening to classical music, traveling to art fairs, and hiking in her free time.
