Campus libraries are open again

Campus libraries in Meilahti, Kumpula and Viikki are open again. Please notice that these libraries are still open under summer opening hours (Mon-Fri 8-16) until August 25th.

Opening hours during fall semester (August 26th – December 15th, 2019)

Helsinki University Library is back to normal opening hours on Monday August 26th.

Kumpula Campus Library is open Mon-Fri 8-18, customer service desk Mon-Fri 10-17. During the rest of the opening hours library operates as Self-Service Library.

Viikki Campus Library is open Mon-Fri 8-19, customer service desk Mon-Fri 10-17. During the rest of the opening hours library operates as Self-Service Library.

Meilahti Campus Library at Terkko Health Hub is open Mon-Fri 8-20, customer service desk 10-17. During the rest of the opening hours library operates as Self-Service Library.

Main Library Kaisa House is open Mon-Fri 8-20, Sat 11-17 and Sun 15.9.-1.12. 11-17. Customer service on the 3rd floor is open Mon-Fri 10-19 and Sat 11-17. During the rest of the opening hours and on Sundays library operates as Self-Service Library.

University of Helsinki participates in Helsinki Pride week with panel discussion and book exhibit

Last year Helsinki University Library took part to the Helsinki Pride for the first time and organized a book exhibit about LGBTQ studies and a panel discussion in Kaisa House with huge success.

This year the library joins forces with the University of Helsinki’s equality and diversity committee and organizes Pride: Change is Coming – Different Voices! panel discussion in a more spacious venue at Think Corner (Yliopistonkatu 4) on June 27th starting on 3 pm. The event will be opened by the Vice-Rector Tom Böhling and the opening speech given by the President Tarja Halonen. This year’s speakers for the panel are medical (MD/PhD) student and the chairperson of Seta Sakris Kupila, senior lecture of sociology of education and senior researcher Jukka Lehtonen, the Vice-Rector of The University of Helsinki Tom Böhling and a spokesperson for transgender people and a sociology student Hippu Helminen, who identifies as a non-binary person.

The themes of this year’s panel discussion are gender and sexual diversity among others.

The event will be held in Finnish, but the audience has a possibility to pose questions also in English.

The Uni­versity of Helsinki to par­ti­cip­ate in the Pride parade for the first time

Pride – 50 years of movement book exhibit in Kaisa House 24.6.-5.7.

Pride – 50 years of movement book exhibit presents LGBTQ themed material from Helsinki University Library’s collections. The Exhibit is on display from the beginning of Helsinki Pride week June 24th until July 5th in Kaisa House’s Guidance Corner which is located on the 3rd floor.

This year’s themes for the exhibit are gender and sexual diversity and the 50th anniversary of the Pride movement.

You can browse the books on the spot in comfortable armchairs or borrow for summer reading, because all the material, except for journals, is available for loan.

Library’s opening hours during and after the Midsummer

From the Midsummer, Friday June 21st on, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campus Libraries will be closed. Main Library Kaisa House and Learning Centre Aleksandria will also have shorter opening hours. From June 24th to August 25th Kaisa House is open 8:00-18:00 (customer service 10:00-18:00) on weekdays. On Saturdays, the library is closed.

Opening hours at Midsummer

Thursday, June 20

  • Main Library Kaisa House is open 8-18, customer service 10-18.
  • Learning Centre Aleksandria is open 8-17:45.
  • Learning Centre Minerva is open 8-15:45.
  • Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campus Libraries are open 8-16, customer service 10-16.

At Midsummer, June 21-23, the learning centres and all library locations are closed. Aleksandria can be accessed with magnetic key during Midsummer (from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.).

Opening hours on Ascension Day, May 29th-30th

On Wednesday May 29th libraries are open as follows:
– Main Library 8-18, customer service 10-18
– Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campus Libraries 8-16, customer service 10-16

Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva are open 8-17:45.

On Thursday May 30th (Ascension Day) libraries and learning centres are closed.
Aleksandria can be accessed with the magnetic key.

Exception to opening hours on Independence Day December 5th-6th

NB! Meilahti Campus Library closes earlier also on Tuesday 4.12.

On Independence Day Dec 6th all facilities are closed. Aleksandria can be accessed with a magnetic key.

Libraries’ opening hours on All Saints’ Day

The Helsinki University Library has the following exceptions to regular opening hours on All Saints’ Day:

On Friday November 2th
– Main Library Kaisa House open 8 am – 6 pm, customer service 10 am – 6 pm
– Kumpula Campus Library open 8 am – 4 pm, customer service 10 am – 4 pm
– Meilahti Campus Library Terkko open 8 am – 4 pm, customer service 10 am – 4 pm
– Viikki Campus Library open 8 am – 4 pm, customer service 10 am – 4 pm
– Learning Centre Aleksandria 8 am – 5:45 pm
– Learning Centre Minerva 8 am – 5:45 pm.

Libraries and learning centres are closed on Saturday November 3th and Sunday November 4th.

Kaisa House is open on Sundays 16.9.-25.11.

During Autumn term, from September 16th until November 25th, the Main Library Kaisa House will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Sundays, with the exception of the weekend of All Saints’ Day 3.-4.11. during which the whole building will be closed.

Entrance on Sundays is from Fabianinkatu or by lift from Kaisaniemenkatu (1st floor) or by lift from Helsinki University metro station (floor K1).

On Sundays Kaisa House functions as a self-service library

The collections and facilities are available to customers on all floors. The customer service on the 3rd floor is closed.

You can pick up your reservations as self-service from the open shelves at the service desk. Should you have problems with using the library or the self-service facilities, phone service will be available.

In case you need a guest login to the University network or copy cards (e.g. for printing), you have to get these earlier in the week.

Campus libraries in Meilahti and Viikki are open again. Please notice that these libraries still are open under summer opening hours (Mon-Fri 9-16) until August 26th.

Opening hours during fall semester (August 27th – December 16th, 2018)

Helsinki University Library is back to normal opening hours on Monday August 27th, with the exception of Kumpula Campus Library which opens on Monday September 3th.

Kumpula Campus Library from September 3th open Mon-Fri 8-18, customer service desk Mon-Fri 10-17. During the rest of the opening hours library operates as Self-Service Library.

Viikki Campus Library is open Mon-Fri 8-19, customer service desk Mon-Fri 10-17. During the rest of the opening hours library operates as Self-Service Library.

From August 1st 2018 there is a temporary problem with access to AsiaPortal due to a server update. The service provider is working on restoring access as soon as possible.
