PhD-project:
Same, same but different…Why? A comparative study of the introductory programme for newly arrived refugees and immigrants in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Ariana Guilherme Fernandes’ PhD project is a comparative case study of the introductory programme for newly arrived refugees and immigrants in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. These countries have, to varying extent, implemented introductory programmes designed to improve the labour market integration and enhance societal participation for refugees and immigrants. Even though the challenges the Scandinavian countries faces (when integrating immigrants into the labour market and society) are fairly similar, the design and implementation of the programmes differs. However, the main focus of all the programmes, that is stated by the governments, are to bring immigrants from a status as passive (my italics) recipients to a status as active (my italics) participants in society. The aim of this study is to understand and explain the differences between the introductory programmes across the Scandinavian countries. A main question is why such similar countries have chosen to organise their introductory programmes for new immigrants differently and how these differences can be explained. This study therefore seeks to describe, compare, analyse and finally explain/understand how and why Denmark, Sweden and Norway seek different paths in integrating newly arrived immigrants into the labour market and society through their introductory programmes.
