Professor Paula Hamilton (University of Technology, Sydney) gives a lecture on “The changing role of memory and history in public life” in Helsinki on Monday 3 Dec, 2012, at 10-12. The lecture will take place at the Swedish School of Science, Snellmaninkatu 12, the Festival Hall (room 133).

Professor Paula Hamilton is Director of the Centre of Creative Practice and Cultural Economy at the University of Technology, Sydney, and Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Public History. She is a historian who has specialised in material culture, image and cultural memory. Professor Hamilton has published widely in memory studies internationally and has worked locally in a range of projects with community groups, museums, heritage
agencies, and councils. She is an editor of ‘Public History Review’ and ‘Locality: a community history journal’, both of which act as a link between the academe and the wider community.

NOrdWel co-organized a session on the “Social Policy Lanuguages in the 37th Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association in Vancouver, 1-4 November, 2012 with presentations by Rianne Mahon, Klaus Petersen, Nils Edling, Daniel Beland, Pauli Kettunen and Dorota Szelewa (chair: Jenny Andersson). The Joint NordWel  and REASSESS Summer School 2012: State, Society & Citizen -Cross-disciplinary Perspectives on Welfare State Development takes place in Hanasaari/Espoo, 12–17 August 2012. This Summer School is fifth in a row and it gathers altogether 36 international PhD students and fourteen distinguished senior scholars for lively discussion and debate. Sino-Nordic seminar on Welfare, SNoW 2012, takes place  in Helsinki 4 – 5  June. The seminar is second in the series that started at the University of Fudan in Shanghain in October 2011. The Sino-Nordic cooperation was initiated in connection with the publication of the co-edited book the Nordic Welfare State, published in Chinese by Fudan University Press (editors: by Stein Kuhnle, Klaus Petersen, Pauli Kettunen and Chen Yinzhang).  Half of the seminar participants come from China, another half from the two Nordic Centres on Ecxellence, NordWel and REASSESS. The working seminar, aiming at joint publication projects, discusses three broad themes: Labour markets, migration/immigration and social rights; ageing populations as a challenge to social security systems; and welfare norms and institutions.

Urban Lundberg was interviewed 22.5.2012 by CCTV (Chinese Central Television) about the Swedish and Nordic welfare model. The interview was conducted in concurrence with a large scale documentary about Social Management in Western Europe.

Sami Suodenjoki’s dissertation Kuriton suutari ja kiistämisen rajat. Työväenliikkeen läpimurto hämäläisessä maalaisyhteisössä 1899-1909‘ was awarded the Best Disseration award by The Finnish Society for Labour History. Johanna Annola’s dissertation Äiti, emäntä, virkanainen, vartija. Köyhäintalojen johtajattaret ja yhteiskunnallinen äitiys 1880-1918 received honourable mention award.

Joint NordWel and REASSESS International Summer School:
State, Society & Citizen – Cross-disciplinary Perspectives on Welfare State Development

Helsinki, 12 -17 August 2012

 

NCoE NordWel and REASSESS organize a joint international summer school in Hanasaari, Espoo, 12-17 August 2012.

Welfare states can be studied with a number of theoretical and methodological approaches, from various chronological perspectives and with a focus on different empirical phenomena. The summer school aims to stimulate discussions across disciplines and foster innovative cross-disciplinary research on the development of welfare states over time. The summer school brings together PhD students and well-established scholars in scientific exchanges.

Distinguished international scholars representing different disciplines and cross-disciplinary approaches lecture in sessions covering a vast range of themes. The list of senior scholars, who have confirmed their participation, includes Jonathan Bradshaw (University of York), Jochen Clasen (University of Edinburgh), Christoph Conrad (University of Geneva), Olli Kangas (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland KELA/University of Southern Denmark), Arnlaug Leira (University of Oslo) Christopher Lloyd (University of New England, Armidale), Kimberly Morgan (George Washington University, Washington DC), Bruno Palier (Sciences Po, Paris), Dorottya Szikra (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest), Noel Whiteside (University of Warwick), Anneli Anttonen (University of Tampere), Pauli Kettunen (University of Helsinki), Pirjo Markkola (University of Jyväskylä), Klaus Petersen (University of Southern Denmark, Odense) and Veli-Matti Ritakallio (University of Turku).

We invite PhD students from different disciplinary backgrounds both within and outside the Nordic countries to participate in the discussion on the development of welfare states, their preconditions, present status and how we ought to study them. PhD Students present their papers in parallel sessions and get feedback from senior scholars and junior colleagues. Poster sessions are included.
