Roberto Scaramuzzino’s Ph.D. project focuses on immigrant organisations and the way in which their functions, roles and strategies in the social welfare and the integration systems interact with political opportunity structures at different levels. Scaramuzzino’s theoretical understanding of immigrant organisations is that their upcoming and development are highly dependent on the national context and especially on the way in which the welfare state and the incorporation of newcomers are organised. However political opportunity structures are spread on different levels, from the local to the international. To be able to understand this interplay the study covers two different national contexts: Sweden and Italy and three different levels of opportunity structures: local, national and EU.
