Outreach program 2015

You might or might not have noticed them in the hallways; we have started an outreach campaign to get more doctoral students interested in the doctoral affairs at the University and to attract more members.

posters outreach 2015 univeristy of helsinki phd doctoral studentsThe posters display various emblematic figures pertaining to different scientific fields and contexts. Originally, we planned to distribute one color in each campus. The centre campus would have seen only the yellow posters, with Martin Luther King Jr. and Alice Paul, a prominent women’s rights activitst. The green poster are aimed at people working in biosciences in Viiki, with Lynn Margulis, who proposed the theory of the unicellular origin of multicellular life and Charles Darwin. Students in natural sciences at the Kumpula campus could have looked at Pythagore and Marie Curie on the blue posters while pink posters displaying Aesculapius and  Barbara McClintock, whose famous work on mobile genetic elements has revolutionized the field of genetics, would have appeared in Meilahti.

Then we though everybody should see all the posters so we ended up sending all the versions to each campus! The posters feature a link to our webpage (bit.ly/phdhelsinki, which you can easily shared around) and a qr code for mobile devices that links to the same address.

On the topic of outreach, our secretary recently appeared on the stage of Studio HBL where she was introduced as the secretary of our association and she discussed, among other the recent budget cuts at the University. We strive to take every opportunity to make the association known in the media. Thank you Julia!

Have a great fall and don’t forget to talk to your fellow doctoral students about the association and invite them to join!

Autumn get together

Remember the PhD association´s AUTUMN GET TOGETHER TONIGHT, Wednesday 23rd September, at 6pm!

The event is organised in the Helsinki Think Company´s premises (Vuorikatu 5, next to Kaisa-library, city centre campus).

Meet your colleagues from the same subject or some totally random other post-grads! There will also be some snacks and beverages, and you have a good chance to ask questions about post-grad studies at the UH or how to get involved in the decision making concerning fundings etc. Some of the board members from the PhD Association will be present to answer your questions, and after the main event we also have a chance to continue the chat at some pub/restaurant nearby.

Please come, and meet your scientific colleagues!

Mielenilmaus yliopiston säästöohjelman johdosta

Hallituksen päätösten seurauksena Helsingin yliopisto julkaisi toissapäivänä 16.9.2015 tiedotteen laajan säästöohjelman aloittamisesta. Koska nämä säästöt ovat kova isku niille, jotka työskentelevät tieteen puolesta Suomessa, on Helsingin jatko-opiskelijat ry:n hallitus päättänyt osallistua mielenilmaukseen, joka järjestetään huomenna perjantaina 18.9.2015 Helsingin Rautatientorilla klo 11.

Käytännössä yliopiston säästötoimet tarkoittavat muun muassa koko yliopiston henkilökuntaa koskevien yt-neuvottelujen käynnistämistä. Tarkoituksena on vähentää henkilökuntaa maksimissaan 1200 henkilötyövuoden verran vuoteen 2020 mennessä, mikä tarkoittaa 15 % vähennystä.

Yhdistyksen hallitus tapaa huomenna Kirjasto 10:n sisäänkäynnin ulkopuolella klo 10.30 (Elielinaukio 2). Olet lämpimästi tervetullut liittymään seuraamme!

Demonstration against University of Helsinki budget cuts

As a result of the government decisions, on 16th of September the University of Helsinki communicated the large saving measures that will be launched at the university. Because the cuts will strike heavily on those who work for science in Finland, the board of the Association of Doctoral Students at the University of Helsinki has decided to support the workers demonstration that is to be held tomorrow, Friday 19th September at the Railway square at 11 am.

In practice the saving measures will result in co-determination negotiations that will concern the entire staff. The goal is to reduce the staff by a maximum of 1200 persons by the year 2020. The university is also preparing to introduce tuition fees for students from non EU and EEA countries. The basic funding of the universities is likely to be permanently cut which means research results will be increasingly controlled by business interests as the pressure to commercialize results increases.
The entire message is available on the intranet Flamma

Despite the cuts, the goal is for the University of Helsinki to remain a top university. However, the measures the university is now forced to take are completely inconsistent with this goal as it is clear that cuts of this magnitude will jeopardize both teaching and research. For example LERU’s recent report pointed out that universities have a key role in creating jobs also outside the public sector and that they thus contribute to the welfare of society and therefore should not be seen only as an expense for the state.

By participating in the demonstration, the association wants to show its opposition towards the government’s short-sighted and ill-judged cuts.

The board of the Association will meet up at the entrance of Kirjasto 10 (Library 10, Elielinaukio 2) at 10.30 – you are most welcome to join us!
