Finnish Luther Studies Bibliography until 2008
Luther Studies have a long tradition in Helsinki. Internationally known scholars in the earlier 20th century include Lennart Pinomaa and Lauri Haikola. This website concentrates on research done at the Department of Systematic Theology, University of Helsinki, since 1980. The website thus covers Prof. Tuomo Mannermaa‘s period as Professor of Ecumenical Theology and the research conducted in collaboration with him. It should be noted that important Luther and Reformation research is also done elsewhere in Finland, e.g. in history and church history departments and in the field of German language studies. The works listed here have a distinct theological profile.
Recent Finnish Luther studies are characterized by an intensive project work. Many results are published as multi-author works which sometimes derive from congresses and workshops. But also dissertations and monographs are linked to one another in a way that sometimes looks programmatic. At the same time it must be emphasized that the so-called “Mannermaa school” is by no means putting forward a monolithic interpretation of the German Reformer or claiming that we can today compile a Lutheran Summa theologiae. Over-simplifications like “philosophical Luther” or “Catholic Luther” or “ecumenical Luther” should also be avoided.
Some general trends can nevertheless be observed. The real presence of Christ in the believer is seen as the core of Luther’s theology and a central feature (perhaps even “the” central feature) of his doctrine of justification. The idea of this real presence becomes connected with an “ontological” understanding of theology. Whether this means a philosophical (e.g. relational) metaphysics, a theological (e.g. eschatological) ontology of the Word, or simply an affirmation of the view that Christian message deals with the concrete created reality, remains to be discussed.
Theology of love and theology of the cross are among the central features of Finnish approach. Sacraments and ecclesiology are frequently discussed, but it would go too far to conclude that these discussions opt for a certain ecclesial or ecumenical goal. Although the Finnish Luther studies are done within the field of systematic theology, they are for the most part making historical claims. A discussion on the plausibility and the truth of Finnish results should thus proceed by using historical and textual arguments.
Finnish approach is often very critical of earlier research paradigms. We claim that the post-Enlightenment Luther research has been seriously burdened by confessional and philosophical pre-conditions, among which the overall hostility to “ontological” issues is one of the most important ones. The good alternative is not, however, a naive traditionalism or a farewell to modernity. Finnish scholars aim at taking philosophical and hermeneutical challenges very seriously and they have normally had an advanced critical philosophical training during their postgraduate studies.
