Is a research assistant of the Sveaborg project. In my MA thesis, I analyze the demographic structure of Sveaborg in 1806. Thousands of people lived in the fortress and its population was in fact larger than that of nearby city of Helsinki. The island community had civil and military officials, garrison troops, a squadron of Army Fleet and prisoners but also craftsmen and other civilians. Many soldiers and civilian had families in the fortress and it thus resembled in many ways an ordinary city. The main aim of my research is to provide a throughout analysis of the structure of this population, of its different functions and especially, of the role of the civilian population in a military establishment. Answering these questions will also reveal information about the governmental structure of Sveaborg.
