Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in rural development, agriculture, agricultural economics, rural finance, public policy or related disciplines.

• Field level experience on rural and agricultural development activities in a developing country is an asset.

Did you get the highest grade for a Bachelor level coursework? Participate in the Undergraduate Awards competition by 24.5.2013!

If you are in your final or penultimate year of studying at the University of Helsinki on the undergraduate, i.e. Bachelor, level, and if you have received the highest grade possible (5) for a completed coursework (extensive essay, Bachelor’s thesis or project), you have the opportunity to participate in the Irish Undergraduate Awards competition.

The Irish Undergraduate Awards (UA) is an academic awards programme open to undergraduate, i.e. Bachelor level, students. It aims to celebrate and support the world’s brightest and most innovative undergraduate students by recognizing their best coursework and projects. The awards programme is open to Bachelor students in their final or penultimate (next to last) year of studies. The winners are given the opportunity to network and receive international recognition for their academic achievements.

The award is not a monetary prize. Winners are brought to Ireland for a three-day summit and all winners are published in the Undergraduate Journal, which is circulated to University libraries worldwide.

You can find basic information on the Undergraduate Awards in the Students section of Flamma. Please note that in order for you to enter the competition the coursework has to be completed in English. If the essay/thesis/project is written in another language than English it has to be translated into English.

In 2013 the last day to submit an entry is May 24th, 2013, but you should reserve a space in the competition as soon as possible as the number of places is limited.

The Agricultural Development and Nutrition teams at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a new funding opportunity for the development of a consortium with both agricultural and nutrition expertise, with the mandate of “Improving Nutrition Outcomes through Optimized Agricultural Interventions” in Africa.

Through its members, the consortium must have strengths in program design, implementation, and rigorous monitoring and evaluation—with a strong focus on providing these services as technical assistance.

The duration of this grant will be at least 5 years. There is a strong preference for the lead organization to be headquartered in Africa.

BMGF anticipates a strong need for several other types of partners, most notably a research/evaluation partner(s) and multiple local partners across countries. BMGF would like to fund the consortium to work in Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Nigeria.

The concepts are to cover a minimum of four of these countries. BMGF will consider regional or language-based consortia (for example, East or West Africa, anglophone or francophone countries).

This grant opportunity is open until 7 June 2013.

Return to the portal homepage to personalize your password and complete your account profile.
2. Download the LOI application form:   After you complete your account profile, you may access the LOI application by logging into your account at this link. The LOI Application includes questions regarding the purpose, approach, and budget of your project. It includes instructions regarding the format and content of your LOI.
3. Submit your LOI: Once you begin working on your LOI, you will be able to review your LOI, make changes, and save prior to submitting it to the foundation. You can save the application and return to it later by logging in any time before the submission deadline with your email address and password. Once you have logged into the portal, the application will appear in “My Open LOIs and Grant Applications”.

KEHITYSTUTKIMUKSEN MAISTERIPALKINTO 2013 / MASTER’S AWARD IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES 2013 (English below)
Oletko sinä tehnyt laadukkaan globaalia kehitystä tai kehitystutkimusta käsittelevän pro gradun tai diplomityön? Tai tiedätkö sellaisen tekijän?

Finnish University Partnership for International Development – UniPID (www.unipid.fi) ja Kehitystutkimuksen seura (www.kehitystutkimus.fi)

etsivät yhteistyössä korkealaatuisia ylempään korkeakoulututkintoon sisältyviä opinnäytetöitä UniPID-yliopistoista palkittavaksi.

Palkinnon summa on 1000 euroa. Lisäksi jaetaan kaksi kunniamainintaa erityisen ansioituneille töille.  Kehitystutkimuksen maisteripalkinto ja kunniamaininnat tullaan jakamaan marraskuussa 2013 järjestettävässäPohjoismaisen kehitystutkimuksen konferenssissa.
Kehitystutkimuksen maisteripalkinto 2013-kilpailun kriteerit ovat:
- työ on hyväksytty 1.8.2012–31.7.2013 välisenä aikana UniPID-yliopistossa ylemmän korkeakoulututkinnon opinnäytteeksi
- työn arvosana on vähintään magna cum laude tai korkeampi, tai vähintään 4 jos työ on arvosteltu asteikolla 1-5.
- työn tieteenalaa ei ole etukäteen rajattu, mutta siinä tulee olla keskeisessä roolissa jokin seuraavista kehitystutkimuksen viitekehyksistä: kehitystutkimus, kehitysmaatutkimus, kansainvälinen kehitys tai globaalin etelän tutkimus
- kielenä joko kotimaiset kielet tai englanti

Epäselvissä tapauksissa palkintotyöryhmä päättää, täyttääkö työ edellä mainitut ehdot.

OSALLISTUMINEN
Työ on lähetettävä palkintotyöryhmän sihteerille, Outi Etuaholle, 31.7.2013 klo 16.00 mennessä sähköisessä muodossa (PDF- tiedostona). Sähköisen version voi toimittaa CD-levylle tai vastaavalle tallennettuna tai lähettää sähköpostin liitetiedostona. Työn voi lähettää joko työn ohjaaja, tekijän suostumuksen varmistaen, tai tekijä itse.

Työn ohessa on toimitettava seuraavat tiedotja dokumentit:
- työn tekijän henkilö- ja yhteystiedot (kotiosoite, sähköposti ja puh.nro),
- opintosuoritusote ja/tai tarkastajan lausunto, josta ilmenee mistä yliopistosta ja miltä laitokselta työ on peräisin, kuka oli työn ohjaaja, mikä oli työn arvosana ja milloin se virallisesti hyväksyttiin
- työn tiivistelmä (max 1 sivu)
- perustelut kilpailuun osallistumiselle (max 1 sivu)

Töitä ei palauteta.

MASTER’S AWARD IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES 2013

 

Have you written a high quality master’s thesis on global development or development studies? Or do you know someone who has?
The Finnish University Partnership for International Development – UniPID (www.unipid.fi) and the Finnish Society for Development Research (FSDR) (http://www.kehitystutkimus.fi/?page_id=326) are jointly seeking exceptional Master’s level theses from UniPID universities to be awarded.

The Master’s Award in Development Studies will be presented at the Nordic Conference for Development Researchin November 2013. The prize sum is 1,000 euros. There will also be two honorable mentions for exceptionally meriting works.

The Master’s Award in Development Studies selection criteria is the following:
- the thesis has been approved during the period 1.8.2012-31.7.2013 at a UniPID University, as a master’s level thesis included in a degree (the language is Finnish, Swedish, or English)
- the grade is at least magna cum laude or higher, or at least 4 if the work has been graded on a scale of 1-5
- this is a multidisciplinary competition and the disciplines are not limited in advance. The work should however fit within a development research framework, e.g. development studies, developing country research.
In unclear cases, the appointed Award Working Group will decide whether the work fulfills the above conditions.

PARTICIPATION:
All submissions should be sent in electronic format (PDF) to the Secretary of the Award Working Group, Outi Etuaho, by 31 July, 2013 at 16.00 at the latest. The thesis and necessary attachments should be sent either vie mail on a CD or USB drive, or as email attachments. The work can be sent either by the Supervisor, ensuring the consent of the Author, or by the Author.

The submitted theses should be accompanied by the following information:
- personal and contact information of the author (home address, email and phone number)
- transcript of records and/or examiner’s statement that indicates the university and department, the supervisor, the grade the work received, and the official date of approval
- a summary of the work (max 1 page)
- reasons for participating in the competition (max 1 page)

The submitted materials will not be returned.
