Who is Frank, and what does he have to say about student life in Finland?
Frank is the name of the Finnish student card, which provides discounts and benefits for all students in Finland. Here’s what Frank says about why and how to get a student card, or the student card app, for free for every student:
Dear international student, welcome to Finland!
As a member of HYY you are entitled to a Finnish student card, which literally is your key to an easier and more enjoyable student life. With a Finnish student card you can prove your student status basically anywhere, and get student discount from hundreds of services including public transport (up tp -50%!), public sports facilities, theaters, movies etc., and of course on food, coffee, clothes, cosmetics… you name it!
Now a plastic student card is really not a very cool or hip item as such. It takes quite some time to get it (two weeks or so), and then you still have to get a year tag to your card before you can actually use it. Until then, your discounts and benefits depend on pieces of paper and stamps – and not just one, but several. Just like our great-grandfathers before us! Oh, and the card costs money. So not really the best UI – nor UX for that matter.
The card itself has been practically the same for ages, and once you’re done with your studies, you have a useless piece of plastic (usually with a somewhat disappointing picture of you) to remind you of those golden years when life was more simple and less expensive.
We here at Frank aren’t very nostalgic, but rather pragmatic people. That’s why we decided to bring the student card – well, first of all, to 21st century – to where people are: mobile.
