“Malaria continues to be a major health problem in many parts of the world. Delay in treatment, especially of cases caused by P. falciparum – the species of the parasite that is the main cause of the severe forms of the disease – may result in rapid deterioration in the patient’s condition, and in the development of life-threatening complications. This Handbook, an updated edition of the Management of Severe Malaria, provides new and revised practical guidance on the diagnosis and management of severe malaria. After outlining the necessary general nursing care, it considers possible complications, including coma, convulsions, severe anaemia, hypoglycaemia and pulmonary oedema, and gives specific and concise advice on their management. While intended primarily for clinical professionals and other health staff responsible for centres with inpatients facilities in malaria-endemic countries, it will also be of practical use to physicians in non-endemic areas, who increasingly have to deal with patients infected during visits to malarious areas.”

An estimated 21.6 million unsafe abortions took place worldwide in 2008, almost all in developing countries. Numbers of unsafe abortions have increased from 19.7 million in 2003 although the overall unsafe abortion rate remains unchanged at about 14 unsafe abortions per 1000 women aged 15–44 years. This increase in number of unsafe abortions without a corresponding increase in the rate is mainly due to the growing population of women of reproductive age.”

People with disabilities have generally poorer health, lower education achievements, fewer economic opportunities and higher rates of poverty than people without disabilities. This is largely due to the lack of services available to them and the many obstacles they face in their everyday lives. The report provides the best available evidence about what works to overcome barriers to health care, rehabilitation, education, employment, and support services, and to create the environments which will enable people with disabilities to flourish. The report ends with a concrete set of recommended actions for governments and their partners.
This pioneering World report on disability will make a significant contribution to implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. At the intersection of public health, human rights and development, the report is set to become a “must have” resource for policy-makers, service providers, professionals, and advocates for people with disabilities and their families.”

Description:

“Estimating the global magnitude of blindness and visual impairments is part of the core functions of WHO and since 1995 the Prevention of Blindness team has been issuing regular updates of the estmates.

The estimates, which are provided for the 6 WHO regions offer a tool to monitor the global trend of avoidable blindness and to identify any significant changes in the distribution in the six regions and in the attiributed causes.

From the prevalence and the causes of the impairment the need of assessments, the interventions or norms can be defined; plans of action can be developed or monitored.

The data indicate that visual impairment and blindness are lower than in past estimates , with different distribution in WHO regions, and with significant changes in the causes.”

“Suicide is a serious global public health problem; it is associated with an array of
factors, including mental illness, social isolation, physical illness, substance abuse, family violence and access to means of suicide. The epidemiology of suicide rates varies across countries and regions; those in eastern Europe are among the highest in the world. Despite substantial efforts in many countries, including through dedicated national plans, it remains unclear as to which interventions are the most effective.
This report therefore aims to synthesize research findings from existing systematic
reviews to address two questions:
• What types of preventive interventions have been evaluated in the published literature?
• Which strategies have good-quality evidence to support them?
Limited evidence – as well as variability by population characteristics, social, cultural
and socioeconomic situation – suggests that a combination of preventive approaches, addressing different risk factors at different levels, is required. In addition, an evaluation
framework should accompany the implementation of any new intervention.”

Environmental health inequalities in Europe : assessment report

Description:

“The unequal distribution of people’s exposure to – and potentially of disease resulting from – environmental conditions is strongly related to a range of sociodemographic determinants. Interventions to tackle such environmental health inequalities need to be based on an assessment of their magnitude and on the identification of population groups that are most exposed or most vulnerable to environmental risks. But data are scarce.

To address this gap, and follow up on the commitments made at the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health in Parma, Italy in 2010, the WHO Regional Office for Europe has carried out a baseline assessment of the magnitude of environmental health inequality in the European Region based on a core set of 14 inequality indicators.

The main findings indicate that socioeconomic and demographic inequalities in risk exposure are present in all countries, though they vary from country to country. The report reviews inequalities related to housing, injuries, and the environment, identifies gaps in evidence that still need to be filled, and suggests priority action to be taken at both the subregional and the national level, bearing in mind those national variations.”
