Flux measurements
We have measured the CH4 flux with static chamber method at the forest floor, and from stems and shoots of common boreal trees (Betula pendula, B. pubescens, Pinus sylvestris, and Picea abies).
The CH4 flux above the forest canopy has been measured with concentration gradient (modified Bowen-ratio) and eddy covariance techniques.

Microbes
Current work with plant and soil samples from Hyytiälä and Lettosuo:
- Detection and quantification of functional genes for methanogens (mcrA) and methanotrophs (pmoA)
- Analysis of methanogen and methanotroph communities (Miseq high-throughput sequencing)
- Incubation experiments for the potential CH4 production/oxidation in different conditions
In the future:
- Analysis of fungal communities and their role in CH4 emissions
- Analysis of microbes related to N2O emissions
