We’ve had a joyful and active 6 months in terms of research.

Past events:
AGORA and CoSupport organised a workshop for writers of the upcoming book Terapeuttinen valta ja kansalaisuus (eds.) Kristiina Brunila, Esko Harni, Antti Saari ja Hanna Ylöstalo. There was an open lecture of Professor Suvi Salmenniemi (University of Turku). The title of her talk was Menetyksiä, mukautumista ja moninaisuutta: Terapeuttisen kulttuurin teoriat ja tulevaisuus.
Prof. Marja-Liisa Honkasalo visited AGORA-centre and CoSupport-project (Academy of Finland) and we discussed about the ethos of vulnerability and education.
Tuuli Kurki defended her doctoral dissertation “Immigrant-ness as (mis)fortune? – Immigrantisation through integration policies and practices in education” in February 2019. The dissertation examines how integration policies and practices in education function and participate in the making of immigrant subjectivities. Prof. Heidi Safia Mirza, Goldsmiths University of London served as opponent and Kristiina Brunila as custos.
Kristiina Hannukainen defended her doctoral dissertation “Doctoral education, knowledge and research in knowledge capitalism management” in December 2018. The dissertation focuses on doctoral school knowledge capitalism management, and is framed within the higher education policy discussion. Prof. Keijo Räsänen, Aalto university served as opponent and Kristiina Brunila as custos.
Tasa-arvoa opettajankoulutukseen (TOP) development project has had a busy year. The project has collaborated with staff and students on multiple fronts. The evaluation of Faculty’s curricula is almost finished. The preliminary results show that the curricula do not contain enough conceptually relevant and up-to-date knowledge on equality and diversity issues. This applies to all Finnish study tracks. In addition, the majority of courses with explicit equality and diversity focus are courses that are included in the Education, Society and Culture (Kasvatus, Koulutus ja Yhteiskunta -painopistealue) focus area. Most of the content is also optional.

AGORA’s researchers are part of the new Nordic research network related to marketisation of education.
TASOVA-project’s 2 year long equality and diversity specialist training was fully completed. We are looking for ways to continue this training and tailored for different focus groups.

Hannele Pitkänen will defend her doctoral dissertation entitled “Arviointi, tieto ja hallinta. Peruskoulun paikallisen arvioinnin genealogia” on 29th of May 2019 at 12.
Touko Vaahtera will defend his doctoral dissertation entitled “Cripping Swimming – Culture, Ableism, and the Re-articulation of Able-Bodiedness” on 31st of May 2019 at 12.
CoSupport-project is organising a morning event: “Racism, mental health and education” on 6th of June at 9 in the Bean There Cafe.

Future Trajectories of the Precision Education Governance (FuturEd)-project together with the Education & Society-research community will arrange an intl. workshop related to future trajectories of education in terms of edu-business, edu-tech and edu-self.
