Tuukka Karlsson

Tuukka Karlsson is a post-doctoral researcher based in Folklore Studies at the University of Helsinki. He specializes in Kalevala-metric incantations and has worked extensively with theoretical approaches to semiotic registers developed in linguistic anthropology. He completed his doctoral dissertation “Come Here, You Are Needed”: Registers in Viena Karelian Communicative Incantations in 2022.

Within the ASME project, Tuukka has recently presented papers on:

  • “Enregisterment and changing meanings in the epic genre of Kalevala-metric poetry” at the 51st International Conference of Kommission für Volksdichtung: Song Genres in Social and Cultural Contexts (29th May – 2nd June 2023).
  • “Kalevala-metric poems and objectification: vernacular and institutional conceptualizations” at Silenced Sources, Heritage, and the Oral-Literary Continuum – Rewriting the Margins of the National (28th–30th June 2023)
