Study atmospheric sciences with the world leading scientists of the University of Helsinki

The atmosphere forms a major part of the environment to which life on Earth is sensitively responsive. Changes in the climate system have set humankind in front of unprecedented global environmental and economical challenges.

Division of Atmospheric Sciences at the Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland, has an expertise on multi- and interdisciplinary approach to these problems.

To address these challenges University of Helsinki offers continuing education courses on aerosol physics, atmospheric chemistry, meteorology and atmospheric measurement technology.

These courses are supervised by world leading atmosphere science professors Markku Kulmala and Kaarle Hämeri from the University of Helsinki.

COMING COURSES:

LUOVI7:  Advanced analysis of atmospheric processes and feedbacks and biosphere-atmosphere interactions, 5 ECTS,
March 10-21, 2014, Hyytiälä, Finland.

The course is aimed at PhD students and advanced MSc students in atmospheric/biospheric sciences. During the course the students will utilize long-term aerosol, gas, ion, meteorological and ecophysiological data measured at the ACTRIS stations in order to learn advanced data treatment and data analysis methods.

LUOVI1:  Measurements of atmospheric aerosols: Aerosol physics, sampling and measurement techniques, 3 ECTS credits. May Friday 2 to Friday 9, 2014, 2014, Hyytiälä, Finland

Measurements of atmospheric aerosols include particle size measurements, photochemical smog measurements, aerosol formation measurements as well as horizontal and vertical aerosol distribution profiles. The course gives a good overview of the state of the art of the experimental devices. The course is aimed at PhD and MSc students and young scientists in the field of experimental atmospheric research.

LUOVI5: Applications of weather and cloud radars, 3 ECTS,  June 9-13, 2014, Hyytiälä, Finland

The summer school is an advance course intended for graduate students, scientists and operational users who want to receive an up-to-date knowledge on weather and cloud radar principles and applications. The course is build around a combination of lectures and hands-on experience using data from US DOE ARM radars, Univ. of Helsinki dual-polarization weather radar and CSU-CHILL radar national facility.

LUOVI3: Applications of dual-polarization weather radars

This one-day-course will be given prior to the 8th European Conference on radar in meteorology and hydrology (ERAD) and is intended for graduate students, scientists and operational users who are not deeply involved in the field but want to receive an up-to-date knowledge of Dual-polarization and Doppler weather radars and their applications.

PREVIOUS COURSES:

LUOVI1:  Measurements of atmospheric aerosols: Aerosol physics, sampling and measurement techniques, 3 ECTS credits. May 5-11, 2012

LUOVI2: Formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols, 5 ECTS credits. August 15-24, 2012
