Dear All,

tomorrow, Agustín Martinelli will give a talk about

South American Triassic cynodonts (Synapsida): Diversity and their impact on the origin of Mammaliaformes.

Agustín G. Martinelli
Departamento de Paleontologia e Estratigrafia. Instituto de Geociências, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Ave. Bento Gonçalves, 9500. Agronomia, 91501-970, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. agustin_martinelli@yahoo.com.ar

Cynodonts (Cynodontia) are a monophyletic group of synapsids which include numerous fossil species grouped into a paraphyletic series (known as non-mamaliaform cynodonts) plus the clade Mammaliaformes. Into the latter, mammals (Mammalia) are included. The cynodonts were ecologically successful and taxonomically diverse during the Triassic and the South American fossil record is particularly important in containing key taxa to understand the history of this clade. An overview of the main groups of non-mamaliaform cynodonts, focused on records from Brazil and Argentina, will be presented, dealing with morphological, taxonomic, phylogenetic and biostratigraphic aspects of cynodonts and their impact on the origin of mammaliaforms.

Specimens from the group discussed will also be present, along with some microscopes, and there will be beer/dinner session afterwards for those willing to join.
