Project description

Bridging Worlds of Water (2020–2021, funded by the Weisell foundation) consists of research into the development of online teaching in maritime archaeology at the University of Helsinki. The project builds on an earlier UH research project on what makes a maritime archaeology degree program successful in the long run (published in Marila & Ilves 2020).

The purpose of the project is to design and implement an introductory online course titled ‘Perspectives in Maritime Archaeology’. The course will provide new students of maritime archaeology with a broad understanding of the thematic richness of the discipline ranging from prehistoric boatbuilding to the study of past maritime landscapes, and from environmental issues to the intersection of maritime archaeology and contemporary art. The course will be launched in autumn 2021.

Project members Kristin Ilves (PI) and Marko Marila (postdoctoral researcher).
