In today’s global world, the objective of basic education has expanded from developing students’ competences in the curricular subjects to fostering their aptitude for learning later in life. Reflecting this shift of emphasis, the Centre for Educational Assessment was established in 1996 to develop an instrument for measuring learning to learn as the foundation for lifelong learning.

Today, the Centre works in collaboration with schools and municipalities in the fields of educational assessment, research and development. The results of assessment are utilized for monitoring and further developing education in classrooms and at school and municipal level. Assessments implemented at different grade levels or at regular intervals offer the providers of education means to monitor educational effectiveness at municipal and national level.
